Week 2 Notes  Essay Topic and sources on Sakai due Friday February 18 th st Monday February 1 : Abby a Physics Science Librarian ( came in on Monday and showed where to look for help for resources:  Go to Guide on the Ithaca library site  Course Guide  Physics 17500>> Assignment Guide (Shows what to use and what not to use)  Do NOT use academic articles, and do NOT check the peer reviewed  DO use Magazines articles and newspaper articles Then after this we were given a handout that I unfortunately cannot upload because it is the property of the teacher rd Wednesday February 3 : We went over Long Term Observations (More information located on Sakai)  8pm is a good time to go outside and draw your sketch throughout the semester  Draw the scene you see (including trees and surroundings)  MUST include Cassiopeia and the Big Dipper in drawings  Pick a spot where you can see both of these constellations  There is an App called Planets Sky 3D: this helps find where stars are located  After you make a sketch, take a picture of it and post it in a PowerPoint  Then make a paragraph showing how the stars changed throughout the semester Overnight Star Observation  Five hours of observation  Pick a spot, and draw a sketch at the beginning of each hour and at the end of the fifth hour, draw another sketch  Five hours and 6 sketches th Friday February 5 : “Think scientifically”- What does that mean to us?  Doing experiments  Make conclusions based on observations  Identify problems that need to be solved  Create and test Hypotheses  Can never be completely certain - “Uncertainty”/ “error” can be quantified  Imagining many possibilities  Be skeptical and open-minded  Make observations  Analyze stuf  Think critically  Ask questions Scientific Process 1. Observe something interesting (see something “Nifty”) 2. Make a hypothesis>> make a prediction 3. Design an experiment that will test your hypothesis 4. Conduct experiment 5. Collect Data 6. Analyze data 7. Draw conclusions 8. Keep, modify, or reject original hypothesis 9. Share results>> Publications, Conferences 10. Then start over and make new hypothesis ** Make repeated measurments**
