January 31, 2015 Intro. to Communications Professional Development Preliminary Notes (from first week of classes) Brief Howard University history: - Founded in 1867 by General Oliver Howard - Original purpose was to educate former slaves, Native Americans and white women (represented on first seal) - Home to 13 undergraduate, graduate and professional schools School of Communications: - Established 1867 - 2003: John H. Johnson donates $4 million to go toward a fund meant to build a new School of Communications o Professor Shannon & technology center (presentation on Jan. 19)  Technology center exists to allow students the opportunity to register and rent production materials for class or independent use. Required to sign a statement of responsibility/replace any missing or damaged material. The tech center is located on the first floor of the School of Communications in the advising office (C101).  Contact for any group production interests.
