Date Created: 01/31/16
January 25, 2016 Class Notes:  Ustath Rasheed writes the inscription/gives the book to Baba  Suleiman’s mom refers to her dad/brothers as the “High Council”  Page 104- the inscription on the book – naming “Bu Suleiman” = Father of Suleiman or “Um Suleiman”= mother of Suleiman  Earlier scenes – Suleiman trying to figure out what he means to his parents  He doesn’t understand what his parents are getting out of him doing good/performing well.  The novel functions as an allegory: an extended metaphor that usually spans the entire narrative o Types= a political allegory i.e. Animal Farm [story about communism[  What kind of political allegory is happening in this novel? Dictatorship, the abuses of colonial past, also abuses of power in the family structure  Irony: people who are fighting Quaddafi’s offenses (i.e. Baba0 have committed these offenses on a difference level – family scope  How power can justify systems that exploit and promote abuse  Why is Suleiman answering on the phone so willingly> hey know stuff about him [mom drinking], he wants to help  He feels like he is beign cut out from his family but Sharif and man on the phone seem to value what he has to say  Why is Suleiman so cruel to the other boys? First time to exert his power  He is starting to understand the power of information  Sense of power over Kareem: Kareem’s father has been arrested but Baba has not  Footage of live interrogation: this creates fear and keeps people from rebelling o Also: this is demonstrating the excesses of power o Machiavelili (?) – asserts there must be a balance between fear and love for power  What if you can’t make them love you? Best bet is fear but this kind of rule will not last – it will end o Rhetoric of Quaddafi – trying to set up “friend” “loyal” but it is not working  Mom’s family and marriage: betrayal of Uncle Khaled – they want to marry her off so they don’t get shame when she gets with another guy – keep her virgin until marriage  We don’t see these kind of power abuses in non-dictator places
