Interpersonal Communication Interdependency – impacting someone; feedback. Stages 1) Conflict – interacting with a person. 2) Involvement – connecting with a person. 3) Intimacy – trusting someone; being comfortable. 4) Deterioration – weakening of bonds. 5) Repair – fixing the relationship. 6) Dissolution – cutting of the bonds/relationship. Theories 1) Attraction – relationships formed on something a person likes; looks, personality, similarity, proximity, reinforcement. 2) Relationship Dialectics – battling in thoughts; opposites. ˃ Closed-ness v. Openness ˃ Autonomy v. Connection ˃ Novelty v. Predictability 3) Social Penetration – what happens when the relationship develops. ˃ Peeling of the onion 4) Social Exchange – maximizing profits. ˃ Cost-Benefit Analysis 5) Equity Equals – relationship of your rewards relative to your costs is equal to your partner’s.
