Types of Media Effects • 4 types of media effects Message Effects • Saving Private Ryan o Physically disturbed • Behavioral o Watched something, listened to something § Make you change your behavior o Mountain Dew § #1 Soft drink for worst chemicals § Put down Mountain Dew because she read that article • Psychological o Horror movies § Make you feel frightened Medium Effects • The medium is the message o Break up in a text • 93% of communication is non-verbal o Facial features, body language, etc. • ALL ABOUT THE MEDIUM Ownership Effects • Main ownership in media o BIG companies that control the media Active Audience Effects • When we lost to Texas, only people effected by WVU felt the loss • BUT When we beat Kansas, the whole country was excited o We want the underdog to win Theories of Media and Society • Functional o Media can be transferred from one generation to next § Watch certain shows with parents when we’re growing up • Agenda o Media has an agenda o Media doesn’t tell the public what to think, but what to think about • Uses and Gratifications o When we look at social media, what do we look to get out of it § Entertainment Social Learning • Never been on an elevator before, but you learn how to act through other people’s actions • If they’re not going to class, then I’m not going to class. Symbolic Interaction • Photo at end of cheerleading/football practice o Put the “L” up § Low Life Culture Spiral of Silence • If you’re not a majority, you’re not going to speak up o 5 people in a car, 4 want Taco Bell, but you don’t § You don’t speak up • If it is something that you truly don’t believe in, you MIGHT speak your minority opinion • If you have a minority opinion, you might share it one on one o BUT you wont share it in front of the class o OR on social media Media Logic • Videos really can get people’s interest and attention and get them to respond emotionally • Trying to get publicity Cultivation Analysis • Watching a lot of TV, makes someone think about the world more violently • Mean World Syndrome Mean World Syndrome • Any city news channel starts out as Breaking News, or violence for the first five minutes • Believing that a neighborhood is unsafe o Taking your stuff with you when you go inside for a couple of minutes • Super Bowl commercials o PAY attention to how much sex, violence, and nudity is in commercials Media Transformations: • Both girls were in a car accident, different cars, both by drunk drivers. • Media will showcase the white girl • One line about black girl How do campaigns affect voters? • If a candidate resonates with you by the things they think and do, you’ll vote for them. o Resonate Model Media and Political Bias • White person/ Black person same story, white person will get more screen time no matter what Liberal vs. Conservatives • Conservatives o “The duty of the press is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” • Liberal o “Freedom of the press belongs to those that own a press.” Herbert Gans • Did cultural analysis • Ethnocentrism o Believe America (or your own country) is better than any other country • Altruistic Democracy o Trump running “for public’s good” • Responsible Capitalism o With more competition, the price of textbooks will go down • Small town Pastoralism o Iowa Caucus • Individualism o Who is the one person that makes a difference in your life? • Moderatism o Go out drinking, you know your limits o Moderation • Social Order o Journalists trying to get order to something • Leadership o If you’re a good leader you’ll take the blame, and give team praise
