Name Kelly Pirog Date October 30 2003 Class Biology 10th grade Topic Diffusion through membranes gt osmosis facilitated transport passive transport active transport in cell membranes Reference to MA Science Framework andor NSES Broad concept All living things are composed of cells Life processes in a cell are based on molecular interaction Concept 25 Explain the role of cell membranes as a highly selective barrier diffusion osmosis and active transport Re ective Introduction What I ve really been thinking about incorporating into my lesson plans is lots of handson and small group activities The day that Jack from Tumer s Falls took over the class we did a lot of cooperative group learning and I thought how great it would be to be able to do that in my classrooms I wanted to have the students be inquisitive and ask questions about what we are doing and then really understand the outcome Also I can t remember the name of the article but one was passed out in class that listed the reasons why groups should be of certain sizes and how to get students into those groups I really saw the idea behind having four people to a group It really made sense I also feel strongly about using models for learning and having the students draw their own pictures not only gets them actively involved but now they can also compare their pictures with their peers Therefore the three aspects of my lesson that can be linked to course activities are the demonstration the handson coloring and the small group discussion of the demonstration Global and Curricular objectives for students The global objectives for my students this lesson is to be able to appreciate the different styles of teaching and learning It is also important for them to realize that teaching and learning happens in many different ways because teachers and students are all different from one another The curricular objectives are for the students to be able to compare and contrast diffusion and osmosis and also the different types of transport in a cell membrane Brief description of lesson include start middle and end Students will start the lesson by working with me on the overhead on a couple of key notes While we are taking notes I am going to tell them that I am going to spray some air freshener in the far comer of the room When they can smell the air freshener I want them to jot down the time and how strongly they could smell it and for how long they could continue to smell it During this little demonstration we will move on to the topics of activepassive transport The students will have handouts with a picture of the types of transport on them plus osmosis pictures They will be able to color in the pictures at the same time that I am doing it with them on the overhead These pictures will serve as their notes for the lesson At the end of the lesson we will discuss what happened with the air freshener and everyone s observations The students will break into groups to discuss why some students smelled the air freshener first and why some students only slightly smelled the air freshener Timing I Time I T eaclier activity IStudeiit activity I 5 min I Introduction to the lesson I Listening attentively hopefully I 5 min I Explanation of demonstration I 20 min Question Answer w coloring QuestionAnswer w coloring activity activity 15 min Split students into groups for Discuss ndings on demonstration discussion about the demonstration in small group settings Last 10 min Give homework answer and Can begin homework ask questions question s from lesson on lesson Homework Homework includes reading the textbook chapters that we covered in class that day Review any key words that we went over bold face words and do the review questions that I made up Probably three or four of them I don t want to give end of section reviews because they are too easy to answer without doing the reading Lesson evaluation Identify successful management learning enjoyment and the evidence of it Refer to objectives Areas for development Student assessment Knowledge skills and understanding New targets Successful management would happen if all the students would stay focused and intent on the lesson The reason why I want to do so many different things in one lesson is so that the students don t get bored with just doing the same thing for 50 minutes each day If the students can discuss why the demonstration went as it did Ithink they have a pretty good working knowledge of how diffusion and hopefully osmosis works Most students like to color and draw because it doesn t feel like school and they re still learning from what they are doing Hopefully they will remember their pictures and be able to relate the different types of transport Areas for development could include a deeper understanding of cell membranes and holding onto that knowledge when the delve into the next chapter which will probably be on cell organelles The student assessment will be their participation in the group discussion and their completed notes and drawings New targets for consideration could be the students better use of group time better communicating skills or working on their organization of their notes andor notebooks New argets could also include a response from the students on how the class went and how they think it would have gone better and what things they might like to try for next time Adjustments for special needs students Any students wishing to sit closer to the board may do so in order to see more clearly If any students would prefer they may also have a copy of my picturesnotes to compare their picturesnotes to They may bring recording devices to record any verbal communication if necessary If their IEP s or 504 s allow them extra time they may use as much time as needed Materials equipment and supplies I will need an overhead projector dryerase markers blank paper for the students to color on coloring pens pencils markers crayons etc air freshener and good attitudes Safety concerns The only safety concerns is that some students may be sensitive to strong or heavy smells so it is important that these students be given advance notice of the demonstration that will be done If they are allergic or sensitive to these smells they could possibly sit in the back of the classroom for the demonstration so that they don t smell the heaviest smells
