BIOL 207 Week 2 Notes 2-9-2016 Slide 2 - # 1-22 autosomes - #23 sex chromosomes Slide 3 - Nondisjunction -> when homologous pairs don’t get split (can happen in meiosis 1 or meiosis 2) Slide 4 - monosomy -> short a chromosome - trisomy -> extra chromosome Slide8 - Females are born w/ eggs, so the older a female is the older her eggs are - As mothers age increases so does her chance of complicated pregnancy 2-11-2016 Slide 2 - genes a person has & chances of passing traits on -> genetic counseling - 95% of food has been bred for desirable traits Slide 4 - character -> heritable feature - trait -> variant of the character - true breeding -> always produce same offspring (homozygous) Slide 7 - allele -> alternative version of genes that account for variation in inherited characters - parents most likely don’t have the same alleles = kids get different alleles Slide 8 - Heterozygous-> two different alleles - 50% chance of purple being passed on - 50% chance of white being passed on Slide 9 - 100% chance of purple being passed on (TRUE BREEDING) Slide 11 - Dominant – determines the appearance - Recessive – no affect on appearance - Genotype – genetic make up - Phenotype – organisms appearance/ observable traits based on the genotype
