British Lit – Second Shepherd’s Play • Characters o 3 Shepherds – travel to find Baby Jesus § Depiction of Shepherds • Right people to be given the news of Jesus first b/c: o They are the unfortunate of the earth – near poverty line • Genuine in the gifts they take to Jesus o Mak – poor, dishonest man, steals a sheep from shepherds § Mak is given characteristics of the Devil • Justifies stealing sheep b/c he is poor – law=hung from stealing 1 sheep o Gil – Mak’s wife o Mary – mother of Jesus o Baby Jesus o Angel – comes to shepherds to order them to travel to Bethlehem • Pg.459 - Shepherds are cold but have to be near sheep, so they sleep outside o Mak joins them, claims to have no motive to steal from them • Pg.460 – Mak puts spell on shepherds so they stay asleep o Steals sheep, takes sheep home, returns to sleeping shepherds o 1 shepherd has dream of Mak as a wolf – example of dreams as foreshadowing • Mak & Gil are prepared to eat the sheep but know the shepherds will come looking for the sheep o Pretend the stolen sheep is a newborn baby boy – Shepherds accept the lie at first o Pg.462 – Gil is trickster b/c she pretends to have just delivered a child o Line 623 – “swaddle” = significant b/c it is used in the Bible, birth of Baby Jesus o 1 visit - Shepherds visit Mak’s house to look for the sheep § Decide they need to offer gifts to the child – may be realizing the lie or genuine o pg.472 – Make & Gil continue to try to make the lie work o 2 visit – shepherds are curious § pg.473 – notice the baby has a snout & has the ear marking of their sheep • Gil claims baby was misshapen by elf • Instead of handing Mak over to the law, the Shepherds put Mak in a blanket (funny, humor) o Forgiveness for his sin • Angel orders the shepherds to Bethlehem – they understand the importance & are aware of the prophecy o Pg.475 – marvel that people as poor as them would get the message to see Baby Jesus o Simple shepherds are like 3 kings (Bible story version) § Gifts are simple & genuine: bob of cherries, bird, ball (symbolic of world) o Shepherds feel blessed – gave gifts they thought a child would enjoy
