Survey of American History Notes • Andrew Jackson • He changed the way presidential elections were held. He started traveling all over and giving many speeches, and making the people more involved. This raised the voting numbers. Jackson also made the Indians move out of their homes, allowing the white families to live • in their homes. This long trek the Indians had to make was called the “Trails of Tears”, and over 2000 Indians were killed in the process. • He also was very power hungry and tried to manipulate the government by allowing people with little to no qualiﬁcations into government positions because he knew they would support him. • He also created the “Specie Circular” which stated that land could only be purchased with gold or silver, and it shocked the system. This caused many businesses to go bankrupt and close down. It also caused increased rates of unemployment. • The Second Great Awakening • This was a religious revival that occurred as a response to religious persecution. • This led to violence against the Mormons. Encouraged women to improve society. Transcendentalism • • This was liberation from the understanding and cultivation of reasoning. • It transcended the idea of intellect and created the idea that the soul and emotions could create a bond with the universe. • They rejected the idea or organized churches. • The Oneida Community • All of the residents were married to each other, and humans were no longer required to follow the rules of the past. • Temperance Movement • This was the movement that discouraged the consumption of alcoholic beverages. • After the movement, alcohol consumption did decrease drastically. Manifest Destiny • This was the idea that settlers were going to spread farther west, and this did encourage • the movement of people to the west. • The Pony express was created in response to this to transport mail quickly. • Results of Mexican War • Cost 100 million dollars and over 13000 American lives. • New territories were brought to the Union which caused major slavery issues. • California Gold Rush • Thousands of people rushed to California and Georgia in hopes of ﬁnding gold.
