Developmental Psychology- Review for Exam 1 Chapter 1 • Correlation: implies that two scores are related o Does not imply causation • Psychophysiological methods of research o Electroencephalogram (EEG) o Computerized axial tomography (CAT) o Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)- what parts of the brain are functioning during various tasks • Types of designs to measure developmental change o Longitudinal: bring in children and follow them over a long period of time § Disadvantage: people drop out o Cross sectional: investigator studies people of different ages at one time § Disadvantage: cohort effect o Sequential: combination of the other two designs; an investigator studies two or more groups and studies them over a period of time • Ethics and Research o Protect participants from physical harm o Obtain informed consent o Use of deception must be justified and cause no harm o Participant’s privacy must be maintained o IRB/CITI training
