Climate Change: Ozone Layer: Protects earth from meteors. Shields the planet from the sun’s heat. Blocks the earth from UV radiation. But is damaged by CO. Climate: Climate: Is the average of the weather over a duration of time for example thirty years. Climatology: The study of the climate over time and space. Climate regions: areas that have similar climates and weather patterns. To determine climate regions is a central goal of climatology as well as determine climate variabilities like global warming. Mitigation: An ongoing process that works to eliminate the cause of the effect. Adaption: Continuously changing functionality in order to work with new and changing systems. Climate is Place: Climate is dependent on where you live. o Latitude o Altitude o What’s upwind Climate changes slowly and is relatively predictable. Dancing Molecules and Heat Rays: The air is made up of oxygen (O2) and Nitrogen (N2), both share atoms with their same element. Infrared energy or heat energy can be absorbed by above molecules. Adding CO2 adds heat. Doubling CO2 would add 4 watts to every square meter on the earth’s surface, thus making it warmer. IPCC Process: The intergovernmental panel on climate change keeps continuous track of the latest climate change. They write assessment reports every 57 years. These reports have to be agreed on by all nations. Myths and Facts on Climate Change: One myth is that climate change is caused by a rise in solar activity. The facts are that solar activity has been slowly decreasing since 1980, but Temperatures have been steadily rising. Another myth is that not all scientists believe in global warming. The fact is that most all (75%) of scientist agree that global warming is man caused and the other 25% did not state either way in their papers. Another fact is that 45% of Americans understand that CO2 is good at trapping heat, but are unaware that both methane and water vapor also trap heat. Myth: that Americans don’t know where their fossil fuels come from. Fact: 52% are aware that their fossil fuels come from plants and photosynthesis of millions of years. Fact: That 47% of Americans think that fossil fuels come from dinosaurs. Myth: That nuclear power plants cause global warming from greenhouse gases. Fact: Nuclear power plants don’t emit greenhouse gases except; the only greenhouse gases associated with nuclear power plants is their construction and deconstruction. So What? Why does it matter? We aren’t entirely sure the effects of global warming. But scientists clam that global warming will cause waters to rise, beaches will thus be destroyed, island nations will be engulfed by water, wetlands will be destroyed, etc… There will be a reduced crop yield. Increased amount of water borne diseases. Driving Forces for Human Impact: Population, Economy, Agriculture, Technology, Land use, and Energy structures. All reasons why we continue a pollution cycle. Climate change impacts terrestrial ecosystems like agriculture. Also effects sea levels. Effects atmospheric system like storms. Carteret Island: Home to approx. 1,000 people originally. Floods amplified and caused home damage, destroyed agriculture, and contaminated the water. This was the first time people were forced to relocate because of environmental impact. This also had cultural impacts on the people who lived there. VectorBorne Disease Susceptibility: The current tropical and subtropical disease will change due to climate change. The ones that are to most likely to change are Malaria, river blindness, Dengue Fever, and Yellow fever. What we know for sure: CO2 molecules absorb heat and then reemit this heat. The reemit process causes each CO2 molecule to double. Additional CO2 will just continue to add to the worlds heat. Our goal now is to level off our nonrenewable resource use and replace our increasing usage demand with renewable energy. How we do this is increase our cars fuel efficiency and start changing to CFL bulbs. That’s not all we need to start switching over what fuels we use to renewable ones. Natural Gas Caveat: Natural gas is cleaner to burn than coal is. But natural gas also emits more greenhouse gases. If we installed 1 million wind mills, wind electricity would take over coal electricity. Solutions: In order to create a good standard of living for every one on earth we need to find power sources that do not emit CO2. This is expensive and politically hard to achieve because it requires a large change in economies.
