▪ 2/1 ▪ id ego super ego ▪ born with id- the repository or container of your instinctual drive- libido- infantile sexuality ▪ how does the id think?- primary process thinking ⁃ how you see yourself on a day to day basis ▪ if you are dreaming there is a phenomenal that time and space simply don’t command the same obedience from your mind ▪ see yourself from outside like a drone ▪ when you establish the ego you become capable as secondary process learning ⁃ develops over time and is partly learned ▪ the idea that in terms of functions of structures they operate in accordance with principles ▪ operates in accordance with the pleasure principle- id ⁃ want pleasure rn gimme gimme gimme ▪ the reality principle- from freud pov- ego only part of you that can interface with reality ▪ when you acquire and ego you become capable of grasping that someone out there is not you ▪ this can be problematic because freud claimed reality doesn’t matter- socialization doesn’t matter ⁃ what matters is biological drive and the way that your drive shapes the pain and pleasure that you do or do not attain ▪ the superego is more or less seeking perfection ⁃ 2 ways to be perf ⁃ you should not be disgusting and vile because we society is going to punish you for having those unclean thoughts about mom or dad ⁃ conscience- at some point your sense of conscience is the idea of hideous things that you desire and all of the guilt ▪ there is a particular moment in time where the superego is formed and the conscience is happening big time and the only time you establish the super ego you are in an absolute state of terror aka fear ▪ the fear causes superego ▪ terrorized and feel wimpy and pathetic especially men ▪ identify with father in principle to become someone like that ▪ pull you in opposite directions ▪ the ego is in a way a pathetic week structure in between 2 powerhouses ▪ id vs super ego ▪ reality doesn’t want to get crushed- ego ▪ pressures of reality and the pressures of perfection from the superego ▪ id says gimme gimme and super ego is guilt and ego is trying to find a middle ground ▪ ego should allow psyche to be at rest ▪ 3 very harsh masters that act on the ego ▪ ego is the ref ▪ a source and aim of instincts is libido and biology ▪ the aim of the instincts is gratification and discharge ▪ the aim of the instincts is gratification ▪ the constancy principle- the idea is that one of the things that you are motivated to do in the psychic system is to bring all tension to 0 ▪ what is the moment when its all at 0 ▪ maybe sleep probably death ▪ compromise vs death ▪ compromise that allows you to navigate crazy forces ▪ death drive ▪ stages of psycho sexual development ▪ over time libido migrates to one part of the body then another ▪ as it migrates and arrives you begin to see and attain pleasure from stimulation of that part of the body ▪ ages 0-2 libido migrates to the mouth ▪ little kids cram things in their mouths ▪ attaining oral gratification ▪ confusion of teeth growing in when jamming your tongue on spot where tooth is coming in- attain possible pleasure ▪ pleasure taken from biting and holding on to other people like a nipple ▪ the early manifestation of something masochistic or sadistic ▪ all you have is the id ▪ ages 2-3 libido migrates to anus ▪ take pleasure from the build up of tension in bowls ▪ wild release of a bowl movement ▪ the anal stage ▪ 1st battle you are going to lose ▪ potty training need to learn ▪ one way or another forced to learn to not poop in the hut ▪ gain ego ▪ gaining the ego to a certain extent ▪ ages 3-5 libido migrates to “genital” ▪ the phallic stage ▪ i’m a boy and basically i look down and look down and say cool ▪ kinda fun to play with ▪ at the same time because libido is at the genitals there are other things going on ▪ symbolic ▪ even if he never sees a naked girl symbolic he looks over and sees a naked girl and sees that she doesn’t have one ▪ oh my god why doesn’t she have one ▪ he is worried he could be deformed ▪ in this moment he’s having psychosexual urges to his opposite sex parent ▪ because you have an ego you grasp that you’re too small and too undeveloped and there are big huge adult males who are competing with you to have sex with your mom they’re succeeding and you’re failing ▪ he’s going to come and cut off your penis ▪ in punishment ▪ castration anxiety ▪ the edible complex ▪ how does the kid get over this ▪ in the face of terror he is going to grasp that this isn’t going to work ▪ he ends up through a mental transformation doing a mental feet of identifying with the aggressor ▪ identify with dad ▪ will permit him the have his mom symbolically ▪ begin to become the kind of person his mom would have sex with ▪ form superego
