Britain is at continuous war with France for 22 years B. Napoleon has been defeated (1815) - The military has been demobilized - hundreds and hundreds of men returning from being at war and are looking for work, at the same time industries are trying to transition. - The economy has been geared towards military production for 22 years, and now there is no need to military goods but rather for consumer goods. - industrial cities have mushroomed - steam engines powered by coal are now the norm, especially in the cotton industry( Manchester) - Luddites try to smash machines to save the artisans who previously did all the work, it becomes illegal to smash machines- you are hung if you are caught smashing the machines. - Everyone works- men, women, and children. Everyone is over worked and underpaid. Industrial cities can not keep up with how fast they are developing. - the reform movement revives - reawaken the movement since they are not being heard through their many petitions. - The working class public starts writing to and for themselves. They being to rally and protest - Government is building new churches to control the people of manchester, and new barracks for military to place the military outside the city incase they get to unruly. 1 Wednesday, February 10, 2016 - anarchy becomes a buzz word - 60,000 people gather in a neat order (festival like) and gather on St. Peter’s field with reform leaders on stage. Official Calvary and local militia are present. - Orders come down for the leaders to be arrested, local militia take the leaders, it turns into a disaster, aprox. 11 people are killed, hundreds are wounded. and it is immediately branded Peterloo massacre. - the government clamps down - Shelley was 22 by the time Napoleon is defeated lll. Percy Bysshe Shelley( 1792-1822) A. Background - Son of a wealthy parliament member - Radical like Blake - outspoken atheist and democrat // gets expelled from Oxford for publishing a pamphlet on Atheism. - Thinks everyone should vote, even women. Making him as far democrat as one could be at this time - opposed great inequalities of wealth // - believed in nonviolent protest // Gandhi quotes his Mask of Anarchy - was a master of poetic technique // admires Wordsworth very much. lV. The Mask of Anarchy A. written in response to Peterloo, is written in one week and sent to London to be published. - It is designed to be easily understood/ ballad for a general audience/ encourages non-violent resistances/ very straight forward for Shelley - many pop culture references. - Isn’t published because it is too straightforward, it was written to have an affect- but doesn’t bc the editor holds it for a long time before publishing it. - has a three-part structure 2 Wednesday, February 10, 2016 - Shelley is generalizing the Peterloo Massacre. Says the government is constantly oppressing the people in different ways, and Peterloo was just surprisingly literal. - Shelley is calling the people to respond to Peterloo 3 Monday, February 8, 2016 0208 Lecture Notes The Rime and Lyrical Ballads I. Coleridge A. Combination of Coleridge and Wordsworth // only two stanzas were actually written by Wordsworth II. Themes: A. Making sense of it all 1. mariner’s superstitions frame of interpretation // he turns to several belief systems. He is throwing anything at the wall to see if it sticks to try and make sense of everything that happened to him. Catholicism: references Mary a) b) demonology: mentions times of spirit encounters c) sailor lore: much sailor superstition d) chance: is it just bad luck/bad weather? 2. our problem too a) what “really” happened? b) marginal glosses just another interpretation // just another layer of an attempt to interpret what happened. you can’t necessarily trust these either. B. Guilt and redemption 1. Coleridge is in the middle of a religious crisis while writing this poem a) Part 1 // (1) Encounter with the Wedding Guest (2) Ancient Mariner sails south, gets stuck in the ice (3) An albatross visit the ship (4) Ice splits, good south wind blows (ll. 79-82) (5) No given motive (6) Sin or random act? (7) Guilt, whether sin or not 1 Monday, February 8, 2016 2. It’s not that shooting the albatross is a sin, but the mariner fixates on it. 3. The way Coleridge presents the albatross shows that we and the mariner do not know why he killed it. Was it impulsive? b) part 4 // learns to forgive himself, but he is only beginning to forgive, he doesn’t openly say that he forgives himself. 1. ancient mariner alone 2. feels like he cant pray 3. blesses sea snakes 4. albatross falls from neck 5. possible moment of redemption c) part 7 // 1. the boat sinks 2. the Ancient Mariner talks with the Hermit 3. The Ancient Mariner parts from wedding guest 4. A questionable moral Coleridge writes this in response to the french revolution. He is feeling the guilt of the blood of thousands in France. He also is a Christian and is trying to make sense out of life and morals in those circumstances 2
