Week 3 Notes Monday, February 08, 2016 10:45 AM Islamic Empires Main Characteristics 1 Have a monopoly on trade- which leads to an enormous wealth 2 Huge, sophisticated military 3 Political unity- centralized Empires 4 Advanced technology and science 5 Arts and Luxuries Civilizations of the fifteenth century A Islamic Empires as a Global force since 1400 These empires also became models of tolerance and inclusivity  Muslims ruled as minorities in the Songhay and Mughal empires and as majorities in the Safavid and Ottoman Empires American Empires Main Characteristics 1 Economically advanced system -> centralized bureaucracy, trade, infrastructure (building, roads, canals, pyramids), stable money system, technology 2 Architecture -> scientifically advanced (building pyramids and such) 3 Advanced military 4 Gender parallelism (men and women had equally important jobs but separate from each other) 5 Legal system 6 Worshiped the sun The Spanish brought over germs that the Aztecs were not used to and the germs killed off 90% of the Aztecs --> genocide of the Aztecs
