lO Psychology Week 5 Textbook Notes 12022016 192400 e This set contains some more notes on job analysis and performance criteria as discussed in the textbook readings e lob Analvsis e Also referred to as quotwork analysisquot a formal procedure by which the content of work is de ned in terms of activities performed and attributes needed to perform the work 0 lO psychologists must often identify the criteria of effective work performance 0 These criteria then become the basis for hiring people choosing them according to their ability to meet performance criteria training them to perform work tasks that are important and paying them high levels of performance warrant higher pay 9 Criterion Deficiency Relevance and Contamination e Actual criteria is the operational or actual standards that researchers measure or assess o Criterion de ciency is the degree to which the actual criteria fail to overlap the conceptual criteria ie how lacking the actual criteria are in representing the conceptual ones 0 Criterion relevance is the degree to which the actual criteria and the conceptual criteria coincide o The greater the match between the conceptual and the actual criteria the greater the criterion relevance 0 Criterion contamination is that part of the actual criteria that is unrelated to the conceptual criteria Contamination consists of two parts 0 Bias the extent to which the actual criteria systematically or consistently measure something other than the conceptual criteria 0 Error the extent to which the actual criteria are not related to anything at all 9 Sources of Work Information e The most critical issue in work analysis is the accuracy and completeness of the information e There are three major sources of work information and each source is a subject matter expert SME that is a person knowledgeable about a topic who can serve as a quali ed information source 1job incumbent the holder of a job the most common source of information and the provider of the most valuable job information o 2 Supervisor of the job incumbent plays a major role in determining what job incumbents do on their jobs and thus they are a credible source of information o 3 Work analyst used as SMEs when comparisons are needed across many jobs because of their familiarity with work analytic methods analysts often provide the most consistent acrossjob ratings e KSAOs an abbreviation for knowledge skills abilities and other characteristics 12022016 192400 12022016 192400
