Simulations Definition: Imitates situations using symbolic models that probabilistic, instead of deterministic. Advantages:  Safety  Cost effective  Time efficient Steps: 1. Generate random variables a. uniform distribution of variables between 0 and 1. i.e. RAND () b. uniform distribution in random integers between (a,b). i.e. RANDBETWEEN() 2. Create a rule to map random numbers to values of the variable desired in the proportion; apply rule Types of Variables: Discrete – simulates specific values or specific points. EX: # of people waiting in line. Coin Toss. More Examples: normal distribution, uniform Continuous – simulating any value between specific points. EX: amount of time person spends in a queue. More Examples: binomial, poisson, and uniform NOTE: Random Numbers are considered “live” when used in excel. Therefore any change in the spreadsheet will cause those random generated numbers to recalculate giving you new random numbers. To keep them the same copy paste those numbers into the cell so that they do not change. Evaluation of Results: Simulations measure the quality of a solution because it gives the probability of a certain event occurring. It shows variability. Does not necessarily give the best possible answer. It gives the most likely answer.
