Payten Sonnen WGSS 223 11/11/15 Homework Activity #5 The Morning After Pill (Plan B): The Morning After Pill or Plan B is a high dose birth control pill. This pill contains high levels of a hormone called progestin that prevents fertilization of female eggs 72 hours after unprotected sex. The Morning After Pill works in the same way birth control pills do, just for a shorter period of time. The most available form of The Morning After Pill is called Plan B. Plan B is available to women 17 or older, however they do not require ID when purchasing, making it available to people younger than 17 as well. This form of the Morning After Pill can also be purchased at a majority of drug stores including Walgreens, Rite Aid, Target, etc. for $40-$50 dollars. Like many forms of contraception there are groups of people who either support it, or don’t support it. Each group has their arguments as to why. Support The Morning After Pill: First of all it is important to understand that Plan B is NOT an abortion pill, but instead prevents fertilization after unprotected sex before pregnancy can happen (ultimately preventing unwanted pregnancies). This being said, Plan B also aids in reducing teen pregnancies. 4/5 pregnancies of young women aged 19 or younger were unintended. Plan B is also far cheaper than other forms of birth control, making it more easily accessible to women of low income, minimal education, or are unmarried. On top of this, Plan B is a good “short-term” form of birth control ideal for women who are not in long-term relationships. Arguments Against The Morning After Pill: Those who oppose The Morning After Pill are afraid of the negatives it can bring to girls and society. First Plan B can lead to more teen sex, and therefor an increase in teen pregnancies and STDs. Secondly, it is feared that easy access to Plan B will prevent girls from reaching out to their parents or doctors to discuss their options, and provides them with an easy fix to their problem. Lastly, people fear the side effects of the high amounts of the hormone, Progestin, and the negative affects it may have on young women still going through puberty. I side with those who support The Morning After Pill. We are all entitled to make our own decisions especially wen it involves our own bodies. I do not believe that just because one group of people opposes something due to religious or moral beliefs, that other people should have to follow.
