A Guard Channel Technique to Control Handoff Dropping Cell phone users are on the move Often they move out of communications range with one cell tower base station and into range of another one That is they move from one cell to another cell Cell systems are designed to deal with the handoff of calls from one cell to another However if there are insufficient resources no channels available in the new cell then the customer experiences a call drop called handoff dropping From a customer perspective handoff dropping is worse than blocking an initial call attempt If no provisions are made for special handling of handoff calls then the probability of handoff dropping is the same as the initial call attempt blocking A technique called guardchannel provides for special handling of handoff calls Here assume the cell can support a total of N calls Handoff calls can use any of the N circuits while new calls originating within the cell can only use N g circuits In this way g circuits are exclusively reserved for use by the handoff calls If g0 then probability of handoff dropping is the same as the initial call attempt blocking and under the standard assumptions this can be calculated using the Erlang B blocking formula As g increases the probability of handoff dropping will decrease while the initial call attempt blocking will increase Use simulation to determine the tradeoff between the probability handoff dropping and the initial call attempt blocking Use the hierarchical block capability of Extend to simplify your top level model Use the following parameters N 10 Average holding time 2833 min 7x41arrival rate of new initial calls 174 callsmin 7tharrival rate of handover calls 0217 n 036 callsmin g0 1 2 3 4 5 a Select a simulation run time justify your selection b Verify that for g0 the probability of handoff dropping is the same as the initial call attempt blocking and can be predicted using the ErlangB formula c Graphically display the tradeoff between handoff dropping and the initial call attempt blocking d Discuss the tradeoff between handoff dropping and the initial call attempt blocking Is the guard channel approach effective For the parameters used in this simulation study recommend and justify a value of g See Chapter 9 in Mobile Wireless Communications by Mischa Schwartz Cambridge University Press 2005 for theoretical discussion of admission control and handoff in cell systems
