COMIVIITTEE ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES AND ADVISIN G 1Linutes of the Meeting for December 11 2007 The committee met on Tuesday December 11 2007 at 1100 am in Room 210 Strong Hall The following were present Banwart Blackmore Bradley Bruss guest Burright Carlson Childs Crandall Crosby D Anieri Dickey Eggleston guest Manning McNeley Mort Rowland guest Shaw Tuozzo guest MINUTES The minutes for November 27 2007 were approved CHAIR39S REPORT Professor Crandall reported he would be on sabbatical for Spring 2008 and that Professor Carlson would begin as CUSA chair in January He also reported the Communications and Philosophy departments would be making their presentations and handouts from both departments had been distributed earlier DEAN 39S REPORT Professor D Anieri reported University Senate voted not to change the range of available grade options at the University to include the A grade Therefore the College s recently approved plus and minus grading system would not include A as a grade option He also thanked Professor Crandall for his leadership as CUSA Chair during Fall 2007 particularly as CUSA began its assigned charge of reviewing the recommendations from the General Education Task Force CLAampS STUDENT ACADEMIC SERVICES REPORT Dr McNeley reported student evaluations were to begin soon SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIR REPORTS A CURRICULAR CHAN GESDEGREE REQUIREMENTS 1 Curricular Changes FULL COMMITTEE ACTION Approval was granted for AAAS 317 AMS 317 AMS 696 ANTH 390 ANTH 583 GEOG 513 GEOG 535 GEOG 536 HIST 317 WS 317 WS 583 2 Degree Requirements FULL COMMITTEE ACTION Approval was granted for a Change to Math courses that count as Principal Courses b Changes to the Molecular Biosciences BS B ACADEMIC STANDARDSiProfessor Carlson reported they had scheduled three meetings to process student petitions in the break between Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 C ADVI SING amp AWARDSiNo report OLD BUSINESS General Education Task Force Recommendation to consider the status of Mathematics and Electrical Engineering amp Computer Science courses in the NM component of the Natural ScienceMathematics requirement It was agreed that the approval by CUSA for Change to Math courses that count as Principal Courses in the Degree Requirements of this 121107 meeting addressed the Task Force s General Education recommendation for review of Mathematics courses in the NM component of the Natural ScienceMathem atics requirem ent For Electrical Engineering amp Computer Science courses in the NM component of the Natural ScienceMathematics requirement it was recommended that the EECS Department be asked to prepare an updated list of EECS courses for CUSA to review NEW BUSINESS Chair Rowland and Professor Bruss from Communications and Chair Tuozzo and Professor Eggleston from Philosophy presented their respective input on the Task Force s General Education recommendation to consider the status of the COMS 130230 or PHIL 148310 courses in the SpeechLogic requirement Following discussion of the presentations it was recommended that the title of the requirement box be changed to better re ect both the purpose of the requirement and the possibility that other courses might also fulfill the requirement The following motion was made seconded and called for vote FULL COMMITTEE ACTION Motion approved unanimously To change the designation of the requirement box title to Argument and Reason and to retain the current COMS 130COMS 230 or PHIL 148PHIL 310 as courses that fulfill the requirement The meeting was adjourned at 1235 RM
