Lecture 10 apocalyptictism Book that deals with apocalyptictism  Revelation about the end of the world  Signs of the end of the world  Book of revelation given to a man called john  Written during a time when Christians were being persecuted for not worshipping the Roman emperor as God o All citizens were required to worship him as a God o Christians said that they will only worship God and that a human cannot be worshipped  Series of visions = book of revelation  Those that are tortured and killed are told they are martyrs of faith o Meaning means - witness  Those that are killed are witnesses of their faith, somebody dying for their faith  Death is not end of everything bc they are told they will have a knew life, after death, with Christ.  Contains visions of blessed state of martyrs with God and Christ o Martyrs are saints  End of world o When book was written Christians thought end of world was going to happen soon, in their life time o At end there will be final deceive battle between the good and evil  Between the followers of Jesus and followers of satan  Called the antichrist o Satan and kingdom will defeated and thrown into huge lake of fire and storms o Resurrection of the dead, all dead will be risen o Immediately there will be a final judgement o Christ who will be coming the second time will be the judge o Those who are good will be granted eternal bliss o Those who are bad will be condemned to eternal punishment  Book full of images and symbols o 4 creatures with 6 wings o 1 lion who is actually a lamb o 24 elders o 7 seals o 144,000 sealed saints o Unnumbered multitude dressed in white o 7 compants o 4 horseman o A women giving birth o A dragon o 2 beast  One has 7 heads and 10 horns o Number 666 o 7 bowls of something o 2 witnesses o A tree of life o A new Jerusalem with tall gates and tall foundation o A new heaven and a new earth   Gospel of John    Has slightly diff view of afterlife  Different from the rest of the gospels    Eternal life is available here and now  Presents Jesus in a different way o Presented as Logos of God  Word, reason, argument o Jesus is enteral reality  Says Jesus existed for all of eternity even in the very beginning existed through God for forever  "in the beginning was the word. The word was God"  This word became flesh, the world became a human o God offers salvation and eternal life through the word  Most humans rejected Jesus and didn’t accept the word of God  Those who accepted the word of God they are saved and have eternal life  The reward after the final judgement can happen now  Eternal life can be experienced now in ordinary life o What is eternal life?  Why is resurrection needed if we already have eternal life, this too also left unanswered  Many unanswered questions  New testament teaching on death and afterlife have energized western culture and civilization o Hope that there is more after death o Optimistic
