Jerry Mourey and Tim Logikos October 7 2005 1 Clifford Clarke City of Fort Wayne 2 3 4 a b c d Need m technical and great thinkersinnovators Refocus mentality of new graduates from getting a job to creating a job Angelyn Begley s presentation on a business proposal from the Computer Information Association was such an example Organizations cannot afford to spend a long time in bringing graduates up to speed 7 they need to be able to hit the ground running Jerry Mourey Parkview a b Is on the board at the Innovation Center 7 wwwniicnet 7 and con rms the above need Each person in the organization is a microsystem 7 a representative of the entire organization Ken Modesitt added 7 a fractal of the organization is another phrase FURTHER ELABORAT I 0N this comment was more focused on the fact that each person in an IT organization needs to view themselves as a sole provider of a solution they need to have the selfstarter mentality to see a problem offer options for its resolution design and deploy a solution and either operate and maintain it or effectively hand it off to others This solutions focus is inherent in those that have a business within a business mentality when constantly proving their value to the organization Then by coordinating all of th ese microsystems into a standardized and structured set of solutions driven by a common methodology an IT organization can be very powerful Steve Clifford Verizon a b He has four coders in India 7 very good and he pays them a good salary for India 7 probably minimum wage for US However they are good at innovation The need is for innovators who can see the problem Jimmy Branton City of Fort Wayne a Strong need for innovation 5 6 7 8 b Strong need for technical people which he already has reporting to him to gain leadership and management skills tied to presentation that Dr Kim McDonald gave on the new graduate degree in Organizational Leadership and Supervision Tom Gidley International Truce amp Engine a believes some of these concerns are addressed in some required courses for the BS in Information Systems degree CS 466 Strategic issues for Information Systems and CS 467 Project Management Bob Kostrubanic Director of ITS at IPFW PAB member and associate faculty for CS teaches these often times Does not want to be bored Indicated her desire to be a webmaster 7 was discouraged by some PAB members as there are more urgent and less commoditybased needs Web skills at this level are readily available from lesstalented individuals b 0 Jerry Mourey Parkview a He wants people who understand and can develop sustainable components of an overall solutions architecture b Students cannot be consultants 7 not enough background He had been a consultant for many years Wants the person to be a microcosm of the organization fractal from Ken Modesitt 7 see note from ealier He requires people who know how to do porting among various platforms FURTHER ELABORAT I 0N this comment was more focused on the fact that effective I T people all need to understand the interoperability of solutions that they develop and support knowing that nearly all solutions need to sh are inputs and outputs with other solutions or with upstreamdownstream business processes 0 d Tom Gidley International Truce amp Engine a Needs people who can be integrators 7 gave example of having three disparate systems and the need for them to communicate Gave us the siX primary needs of ITampE i Business process analysis ii Program management iii Strategic planning iv System integration v Technical architecture vi Partnership management b 9 Steve Gilliom PHD Incorporated a Some program managers wait until something fails and then show up at his office and ask Can you fix it This is not desirable behavior b There is a marketing void in the organization except for Steve 10 Tim Williams Logikos a Wants to emphasize the increasing importance of and sensitivity by customers to Software Quality b Students must be educated so they can insightfully answer What is SW Quality c Students and all software professionals must address their ability to quantify software quality sooner rather than later the current status quo of software quality will not be tolerated d Foundational to this is a vital need for effective software metrics e Logikos customers applications in medical automotive and DoD arenas are clear examples of the increasing demand for quantifiable software quality 11 Garry McGonigal CEC via WebEx and telecon former member of the PAB at the University of Michigan 7 Dearborn 7 UMD a Not a need for shallow abilities b Ditto for boosting of code c Very scary to look in the future 12 Conrad Foster CEO Imaging via WebEx and telecon former member of the PAB at the University of Michigan 7 Dearborn 7 UMD a Good track record with interns and capstone design course at UMD b Practical experience is vital HOMEWORK TO BE DONE IN TWO WEEKS OCTOBER 14 2005 0 Ken Modesitt will compile this summary from handwritten notes on easel and mail to all the members of the CS PAB Talk to the in uence leaders within your organization Verify the above and addmodify as needed Post sanitized results on website Be able to differentiate between urgen and the importan FREQUENCY OF MEETINGS If fewer meetings momentum would be lost Tim Williams Want to meet students Several PAB members 0 December 8th 2005 not good 7 week before final exams 0 Perhaps at the March 30m 2006 meeting on IPFW campus 0 IF held at Parkview as scheduled on 12805 could bring some students Mourey 7 I don t think that bringing students to Parkview would be valuable and I don t think that holding the meeting at Parkview is in alignment with the real goals of the next meeting which is to have an indepth workingbrainstorming session between the appropriate CS faculty leaders and the Professional Advisory Board With that I d recommend that we move the December meeting to a good location at IPF W and possibly discuss the meeting of students for the 33006 session Ken will collect selected material from Alumni survey and distribute Some other PAB members will talk to IPFW alums
