Re ection 1 Caring Hearts amp Critical Minds Ch 14 David Korsak TCHLRN 322 Section 1 12415 The Caring Hearts amp Critical Minds book brings up a lot of important aspects to reading that I never knew before The author Steve Wolk brings up some great points about making reading a fun experience for students because after all it is our job as the teacher to help the students become better readers and what better way to do that than making reading fun and enjoyable Chapter 2 in Caring Hearts states if teachers can shape our teaching around books that truly excite students we can use those same books to promote reading for pleasure help kids become better readers and teach socially responsible habits of mind If I had a teacher who had known this in high school I may not have hated reading so much Throughout my high school career my teachers made us read textbook after textbook and this made reading an unenj oyable experience because I could not connect to the reading on a personal level Nothing in the books related to my life my experiences or my passions After such a long time of not being able to read something I enjoyed I gave up on reading for pleasure or any kind of reading altogether Now that I am becoming a teacher I feel that it is my job to help students fall in love with books but we also want to inspire caring people critical thinkers and bold and imaginative minds The best way to do this is to have good books in my classroom but in order to find good books I have to start reading again for pleasure so I can pass on this trait to my students I want my students to enjoy reading and the best way to show them is to share my great experiences I have had reading even though I may not have very many great experiences It is my job now before I become a teacher to create some new reading memories I can share with my students Reading will not only help students become better students but it will give them endless joy make them better people and shape a better world In Chapter 4 of the Caring Hearts book the author states that caring should be the foundation of our K12 curriculum I was puzzled by this because I was never taught this when I was in school and I never thought about teaching caring as an important aspect of education but to my surprise caring is really important For example if kids were taught about caring for themselves then students in middle school could maybe answer these kinds of questions Who am I What kind of person will I be Who will love me How do others see me When I was in middle school I struggled answering these same questions and because no one had an answer for me I rebelled and I became a student with anger issues which made me a student who hated the world I never want to feel that way again for the rest of my life and I would not want anyone else to go through that because it consumes you and you know you want to change but it is just too hard If we taught our students more about caring and less about the quadratic formula or grammar or the right answers on tests we may create a better world for everyone Given the human history of war genocide poverty and ecological damage teaching caring may be the most important content children can learn Now that I have read about caring I will most definitely teach my students the importance of caring no matter what grade I may teach because kids need to understand that we can make the world a better place if we learn to care for one another If we all felt like this I would not be surprised if our world became a better place I hope to instill this concept of caring to my students because it will not only make the world a better place but it will make my students better individuals I think one way kids can learn about caring is to assign them a book that has to do with caring We could then have discussions as a class to interpret Why caring is so important and Why caring can lead to a better life for you and the world By doing this hopefully kids Will try to apply this practice on each other and eventually take it home and try it on their family member Last semester in practicum I did not see my teacher teach the kids about caring but I did not know the importance of teaching caring This semester I hope to teach caring to the kids I am doing practicum With
