Psychology Week 9 Social Psychology Social Psychology: the study of how people think, behave, and feel in social situations - humans are social animals Roles: patterns of behavior expected in specific situations Ascribed Roles: assigned. Not under control Achieved Roles: voluntarily attained Role Conflict: huge source of stress. Conflict between different roles Groups: Structure: Network of roles, communication pathways, and power in a group Cohesiveness: desire to remain part of the group Norm: widely accepted standard of behavior - cohesiveness is tied to in-groups and out-groups In-groups: groups we identify with Out-groups: Groups we don’t identify with - idealize in-groups, demean out-groups Attributions: the act of making inferences about the causes of one’s own actions. Or the actions of others - unconscious Errors: Fundamental Attribution Error: we tend to assume internal and to external Actor-observer bias: we attribute other’s behavior to internal causes and ours external Persuasion: deliberate attempts to change beliefs with information and arguments - likable, no personal gain, emotional, clear action, conclusions, stats, repetition Cognitive Dissonance: uncomfortable clash between slef-image, beliefs ,perceptions, etc. - we tend to reject new information that contradicts previously held ideas Social Influence: Presence: the tendency of people to change their behavior around others - social facilitation - socia loafing Conformity: matching behaviors to the norms of the groups we are currently in - high needs for structure, certainty, anxious, and lower self-esteem Groupthink: commitment to continue in agreement even at the cost of creativity Sanctions: laughter, staring, exclusion - importance of the group, size, degree of unanimity are risk factors Compliance: situation where one person bends to the request of another person Door-in-the-face: if we turn down a major request, we are more likely to comply later with a minor request. Lowball: one gains a commitment to perform an action, then later finds out the terms of said action aren’t ideal Obedience: conformity that involves yielding to authority Coercion: forced to change your beliefs or behaviors against your will Brainwashing: forced attitude change (captivity) Cult: an authoritarian group in which the leader’s personality is more important than the beliefs Affiliation: associating with others Prosocial Behavior: behavior that has a positive effect on other people. - generally we’re attracted to people we’re familiar with - our choice in friends/lovers is based on physical proximity - lessened with internet but contact breeds attraction - the more similar we are to out friends/lovers, the less likely we are to face any of the group sanctions (laughter, exclusion) - people tend to romanticize attractive people leading them to associate them with good qualities they may or may not have Reciprocity: The idea that we are more attracted to people who respond to us in a similar way
