Social psychology Chapter 12 Week of April 11, 2016 The suppression of female sexuality Does female sexuality get suppressed more than male sexuality? Social exchange theory (economic) Sees human behavior in terms of costs and rewards Social exchange theory and sex Women take more of a biological risk when it comes to sex (pregnancy). This causes an inbalance between men and women from the very beginning. Sex as a female resource Women have it and men want it more than the other way around Man’s sex isn’t as worthy as woman’s sex so he must try to win her with loyalty, protection, commitment, gifts, etc. in exchange for her resource/service Female sexuality is seen as a resource than can be exchanged for other resources Sex as a female resource and social exchange theory Prositution (more commonly women) Reactions to sexual infedility (women judged harsher than men bc female sex is more valuable) Courtship (men court women for sex) Sex as a female resource As with any resource, scarcity increases its value The harder it is to get, the more valuable it is So sexual scarcity should benefit women Sexual promiscuity hurts other women One strategy: try to suppress other women’s sexuality through societal pressure and punishment towards promiscuity Then expect that…. Women will punish other women who make sex too freely available Women, not men, will socialize girls to suppress their sexuality Evidence: influence of parents Mothers may influence daughter’s sexual attitudes and behaviors More comunication beween mother/daughter predicts daughter’s sexual abstience Influence of peers (not boyfriends) Girls, not boys, more likey to shun other girls for being too promiscuous Sexual pacts over spring break study Influence of boyfriends Males consistently try to increase sexual activity of females The sexual double standard Certain behaviors are acceptable for men but not for women Clear gender discrimination Who supports the double standard more? Men – 12% Women – 46% Equal – 42% Female genital cutting Who supports these practices? 2 mill girls are victim every year 100 mil women liviing with this “surgery” Mothers and grandmothers usually make the decision Women usually perform the surgeries But men report liking women who haven’t had the surgery Recap Mothers directly influence daughter’s sexuality more than fathers Females more likely to shun other females for being promiscuous When women have little power in society, sex will be one of the few resources they have.
