Do they exist on the same spectrum or on different ends?  Both are an aspiration of something better about human life  Some form of regality (whether the emperor or Christ) Western Phoenix  Desire for the desire to never truly die (not necessarily immortality)  Blend of mortality and immortality  Desire to Be reborn again and again  The spirit remains embodied (no loss of physicality) Underlying tone of accounts: The fear of death  The phoenix itself seems to welcome death, but those who created them seem to have such a fear  They don’t really want to die, they want something to go on  “Life again” over and over never changing The Western Unicorn: even early sources  All have healing and are hard to capture  Our desire for purity, and innocence ( as well as the power within innocent), as the unicorn is fierce  Associated with higher morality (Christ association?) embodied in the single horn (Monad?) The lion said,'you fool, don't you knowthat the saying: /the man who prolongs his enemy's life / Takes something from his own; clemency does not entail / Showingmercy to one's enemies.' / The unicorn replied, 'you traitor,don't you knowthat in the same book it iswritten: / Let the victory whichwe contrive by the sword / bean honorable victory or no victory at all; / Let not posterity read that I won by guile; no perfidy / should obscure my triumph.'  Emphasis that the lion was not guilty of wickedness but treachery, so the unicorn is his opposite  Idea of mercy and clemency, not being needed (but this is what the Unicorn has Late 14 century version of the knight of the parrot (in the Arthurian tales-pre kingship)  Young Arthur is stuck on an island, and sees only a red tower poking up in the forest, the tower has no doors and no windows. A man’s head appears over the ramparts and asks what he wants. He can’t help Arthur till his son comes back from hunting. Arthur, and the man talk and Arthur asks his origins The man says he’s a dwarf, and a dwarf has a hard life and he is banished with his wife to this desolate place. His wife died in child birth. In winter, he and the child huddled in a makeshift shelter. Then he found a large hollow tree filled with dead leaves, a good cradle for the baby. But as he plumped the leaves, he heard rustling and found a nest of fawn. Each fawn had a tiny horn in the middle of their heads. Suddenly, the mother returned. Her horn like a weapon, and she assumed he was there for harm. He ran, but he realized he had left the baby behind. The boy cried, and the dwarf crept back, and the baby went quiet. He found the unicorn in the nest with the fawns, and the baby feeding with them at her breast. But he couldn’t abandon him, so when the mother went to feed, he took the baby. But forgot to put him back. The horse came back, but welcomed him lovingly. They lived together as a family. The power of the unicorn’s milk grew his son into a giant. The giant built this tower to protect his father, and the unicorn is till with the giant, even though her other children were gone. A true giant then came back, and beside him was the white unicorn. Arthur is lifted to the tower for a feast, and the giant and the unicorn help loose the ship.  the unicorn, even if it can’t be captured and is a loner, does interact with humans (or human like creatures), whereas the phoenix doesn’t interact with us What does this mean? Switching to other interpretations of the eastern dragon: Docs on Black Board “The Dragon’s Pearl” The dragon is the third creature he meets:  the dragon comes to the boy (instead of the other way round) and at a time where the boy needed significant help  here the great god of the west is the almighty, over the imperial dragon  dragon parts with his treasure willingly and happily (different from other dragons we see) Tchang has:  precious pearl  Pure water  Beautiful wife When his blind mom touched the pearl a bright light unblended her (it brought fish to the lake and brought fertility to the land) they lived happily ever after, and the dragon visits them yearly. The dragon, unlike the unicorn, needs help from others. Unicorns don’t ask for anything back, they bring when they bring. Second dragon story: “The Four Dragons”  Setting is the early history of the world  These four dragons live in the eastern sea, all fundamentally diff from each other  Jade Emperor= similar to the great god of the west figure—all powerful divinity. The rain comes from this emperor not the dragon himself o Displeased to see them (the dragons don’t belong there) o A totally unconcerned emperor (doesn’t care about the ppl) The dragons had to take it on their own (but rain didn’t exist at the time, though the sea did”  Idea to use the eastern sea, the dragons would scoop it up and spray it down on the field o But they will be blamed if the emperor learns of this o But they will not regret their crime  The god of the sea snitches to the Jade Emperor o Pissed, he order the heavenly army to arrest the dragons (who couldn’t defend themselves) and brought to the palace. He wanted to place four mountains on top of them. Imprisoned they never regretted their actions, determined to do good to the people forever, turned themselves into the great four rivers that flow through china and her mountains  Very positive for the people, similar to the emperor (but they are not ultimate providers) Last story: “The Dragon Princess”  3 categories of pearls were given  These pearls that they have, have to be decoded and are the opposite of what you would expect
