Media Aesthetic 260 Notes AvantGarde 1 AvantGarde literally means quotin front of the guardadvance guard French military term a Used to describe people or creative works that are innovative or experimental in regards to culture politics and art Avantgarde is about pushing the boundaries of what is accepted primarily in the cultural realm Often associated with Art Cinema Experimental Film Independent Film or Underground Film a Art Cinema often has a much larger production crew than what we would associate with avantgarde film Art film usually has a very low budget but still has more than avantgarde filmexperimental film It is looking to have more return on investment and to be distributed more widely than avantgarde or experimental film Best defined by a confluence of three factors 9 a Economical i Avantgarde films are made for very little budget You re rarely going to see an avantgarde film with a large budget Nowadays could be anywhere from a few thousand to maybe 20000 or 30000 Whereas even the cheapest art film would probably still be upwards of a hundred thousand dollars or even up to a couple million b Institutional i Different from avantgarde films art films tend to be conceived of as more commercially viable Not only will they have more money invested in them than avantgarde films but the investors of art films will have a higher expectation of getting that investment back in terms of the film making a profit Art films will be made assuming a kind of higherwider distribution and commercial viability and availability Much more so than an avantgarde film c Aesthetic i In terms of avantgarde films doing something new or pushing the form that s going to be partly subjective and hit or miss depending on what the film is trying to do Avantgarde film isn t necessarily going to be all that much more quotout there than your average art film but there is the assumption that art films are trying at least partially to be commercially viable so they can t go too far out there because they don t want to alienate audiences too much Avantgarde films are going to do whatever they want to stay true to the vision of the project whereas an art film will compromise that so that they are more relatable and understandable to audiences 4 Avantgarde films live on the glory of a few people knowing them and nobody else ever 5 having heard of them a Very little money looking for little payoff within standard filmic institutions eg box office mainstream press and made to eschew film norms Goals a Challenge subvert or denaturalize the status quo in some way i Often political but not always b Force audience to rethink preconceptions about cinema i We all have an idea of what it is to watch a movie what it is to build a narrative arc what it is to have characters 9 avantgarde film will bring these thoughts into question 1 quotWe can do film without these things and this is what that looks like ii Question relationship between highlow pop art 1 Philosophical 9 Pushes the idea of if film can be art what can we do with it in terms of making it high art or is it always low art iii Explore the role of the unconscious iv Pose questions about subjectivity v Pose questions of selfreflexivity 1 Going to call into question or at least going to make people aware of filmmaking itself through the use of things like self reflexive editing contrapuntal sound etc c AvantGarde Suggestions i Daisies 1966 1 Didn t have a particularly large budget but had a very clear political message not uncommon for an avantgarde film However they did expect to get that message out there so blurs the line into art film area a ii Touki Bouki 1973 iii Man with a Movie Camera 1929 iv Memories of Underdevelopment 1968 v Meshes of the Afternoon 1943 1 Maya Deren 2 Did not originally have sound Soundtrack added later vi Un Chien Andalou 1929 vii La Jet e 1963 1 Could really be considered as more of an art film Very professionally made with a higher budget Does show avantgarde aesthetics in terms of questioning what a movie is and how to create a storyline though
