Russian 100 Notes: Week of 4/18/16 ● More and more young people, as in the United States, living together before getting married. Careers, obtaining appliances, etc...comes first ● Marriage continues to go up ● Once divorced, the most important thing in the Russian woman’s life is her child and her career. She may never remarry.*** ● “Available men” in Russia, as viewed by Russian women, is virtually all negative, nothing ever positive. lack good manners and are rude*** irresponsible irrational drunks selfish spoiled ● The government tried to curb the divorce rate by creating a divorce tax ● Relationships that last in America... both college educated financially stable religious ● Reasons for divorce... infidelity financial struggle ● 4/10 Americans say marriage is becoming obsolete ● ***Why do Russian marry? acceptable social status ● ***What are women more preoccupied with more than anything? fashion cosmetics ● ***When a mother is asked what she wants her daughter to possess the most (trait) she desires…. femininity ● How do Russian women view American men? anything and everything that is positive rich*** ● What men are looking for in a Russian mail order bride traditional family values he wants her to stay home and take care of him/house/family ● Very rarely does an American woman marry a Russian man. ● ***Abortions are the #1 form of birth control, to this day, in Russia ● ***Abortions are the easiest and most accessible forms of birth control in Russia ● As of 2015, Russia is #2 in the world for most Abortions ● In Russia, abortions are and always have been a woman’s right ● Contraceptives are not trusted and unpopular in Russia (fear that it might cause cancer) ● The Soviet Union was the first in the world to legalize abortion ● ***On average, Russian women in the cities have 68 abortions. Some have had dozens, especially in the rural areas. ● ***1:8 couples suffers infertility in Russia, as a result of the excessive abortions ● Infection rates are high due to these abortions ● ***The leading cause for the high infant mortality rate in Russia, is the high abortion rate ● The problem in Russia, is premature birth ● Other reasons for the high infant mortality rate includes poor healthcare mother drinking/smoking diseases take the baby at a young age ● Abortion is still free on demand (within the first 3 months of pregnancy) unless she can prove… there is absolutely no room in her apartment for another child marriage problems (if proven she could get an abortion later than 3 months) ● Starting in 2003, parliment passed a bill that gives incentives for having more children. (magic number is 3 children***) ● If you do have 23 children or more, your family will recieve a free plot of land ● Putin has promised larger and more affordable housing for families with more children, he is also trying to lure Russians back to Russia. ● Maternity System*** One single delivery room used for up to six women who are in labor (no privacy unless you have money. Staff would yell at women in labor, telling them to hurry up and get it over with so they can go home or get work done, they’re busy, etc…(this experience was so traumatic to mothers that they often did not want to have another). Mothers are kept in the hospital for a week after the birth and husbands are not permitted to seeing the child (except from the maternity ward windows etc…) because the staff thinks that the father will bring in germs. Every ward in the hospitals are dirty. No one gets personal attention. If the woman has to stay in the hospital for a month, the family has to bring her food and any medications from a pharmacy. ● Issues at family planning centers mercury thermometers staphylococcus poor care ● ***During Communism, the number one issue among women was maternity leave. had about 5 months of leave wanted 2 years of full pay ● Women’s role in society she works, she is a mother, and she is a housekeeper (old fashioned) totally independent women usually are career driven (independent) mistresses, do not work, are called “kept women” supported totally by a man (new) ● Typical Hospital unsanitary conditions food brought in by family and relatives (hospital will not provide) lack of medicines (family usually provides) ● Death death rate is high do not always have the money to bury the dead (mass graves) ● Why people are dying off constantly life expectancy rate for men is 61 and 74 for women (current) alcohol economic stress*** (the number one reason) ● What group accounts for about half of all deaths? ***men, age 2560 ● Suicide rate **highest among men and children (those under the age of 14) Russia has the 3rd highest teenage suicide rate in the world ***on an average day, 5 Russians take their lives
