Newton s 3rd Law Every force has one and only one third law pair force The forces in these pairs are equal and opposite Newton s third law speci cally refers to forces created by the interactions between two bodies The two forces in each pair must have the same physical origins and they always act on different bodies When a book rests on a table the force of the book is due to gravity and the force keeping the book at rest is the table with an equal and opposite force These forces are not due to the same interaction so they do not constitute a Newton s third law pair If someone is standing in a boat when they jump off the boat moves back while the person moves forward If they are sitting in the boat and they throw something the boat will move in the opposite direction Since the person weighs less than the boat the person will go further than the boat This has to do with momentum which I will write more on in a later week
