Week 11 notes Monday, April 18, 2016 10:40 AM USSR Union of Soviet Socialist Republics 1917 o October/November- Bolsheviks come to power 1918 o Russian civil war from 1918-20 o Bolsheviks win 1924 o Lenin dies 1928 o Stalin comes to power o 5 year plan Industrialization, one of the main aspects Collectivization- to make individual and private property collective Make everything owned by the state o Gulag System of prison camps all around the USSR Whoever isn't killed was taken to his prison, labor camp 1930 o The secret police (NKVD) is created o Cult of personality starts Propaganda 1932 o 5 year plan is over o Ukraine: 3-5 million people starve because of collectivization 1937 o The Great Terror There was a certain quota that the secret police had to arrest of kill. The quota was the number of "spies" but it was mostly random people 1941 o Germany defied there non-aggression pact with the USSR and attacked. 1952 o Doctors Plot. 1953 o Stalin dies Wednesday Causes of World War Two It started in Asia Japan gains control of Indian ocean and eventually the pacific Why'd they attack the U.S. Japan invading implied defeat but without the attack Japan would only remain a regional and not a global power If you attack you MIGHT gain something but if you don't, you gain nothing Would've had to invade the united states eventually to become a global power Japan felt superior to all other Asian countries b/c of social Darwinism The Nanking massacre The forgotten holocaust: 300,000 dead Decapitated people, pushed them off cliffsn Comfort women Took Korean women and put them into rape camps for Japanese soldiers
