Assessment and Instruction Pairs  Early lesson o If using KWL+, use K as a way to assess current level of knowledge about the  targeted content  Use pictures, realia, or manipulatives wherein the ELL student may post  what they know and teacher assists with English word label as needed o If using KWL+, use W as a way to assess whether or not ELL student understands basic interrogatives (6ws) that will guide lesson or unit o Use symbols with words to pose purpose setting questions that will lead  the class to explore the targeted content in a purposeful manner  when? o Reinforce the interrogatives and other procedural prompts by writing them on the board and using within the lesson or series of lessons o read to find out about … o write the information down on the chart when you find the answer  to one of the ?  Teacher observations o Use a pre­determined system for recording o Stick to it!  This tends to be where problems happen.  System itself becomes  chore so teachers do not follow it.  Make it basic   If you have access to a laptop, use it  If this is more of a hassle, use copybook that has been pre­sectioned into  area of language such as social, ELA{Reading, Writing, Speaking,  Listening}, Social Studies, Science, Math, etc. o Set up a do­able schedule or timetable that you can realistically follow  Record what is objectively observable and make copies of materials to support  No personal comments
