MUSICAL TEXTURE ● monophony = single-line texture ○ one melody with no accompaniment ● polyphony = two or more melodic lines simultaneously ○ based on counterpoint ○ imitative polyphony = one melody imitated ■ canon or round ○ non-imitative polyphony = 2 different simultaneous melodies ● homophony = one melody with accompaniment ○ homorhythmic = texture with all harmony voices in the same rhythm as the melody ● polyphonic texture is based on a technique called “counterpoint” = the art of combining 2 or more melodic lines ● homophonic = a melody and chords ○ when a guitar picks one string at a time, it’s still homophonic texture
