Translating research to conclusions and implications o Reminder of the steps in the research process Identify the problem Convert problem Determine unit of analysis Collect and prep data Specific a model Estimate the model with collected data Test model Use model for prediction Share results Know the audience o Different audineces require different approaches Academic Policymakers Care about data numbers Organizations Care about fine grain details Universeal themes o Use evidence to make claims Make declarative statements, but back these claims with evidence from the research study o Don’t claim too much Data are limited, you can only claim as much as the data allow, and as much as it is reasonable for your inference from your sample Nothing is proven o Conclusions should clearly follow from the study Don’t overcomplicate, theories should be relatively simple explanations of phenomena, should be relatively straiightforwrd Academic o Research paper Introduction and theoretical framework State hypothesis Describe data, and analytical technique Describe results of data analysis Discuss implications for theory (returning to theoretical framework) Discuss implications for policy/ management Research presentation I expected to find this, here’s what I found Policymaker/ political audience o Policy report, memo 2-3 pages Executive summary State the research question in the first sentence Results in the second Policy implications in the third Use the report to elaborate on each of these points Less theoretical focus Be specific about the policy implications Policy Memo o Put only the essential material in a document But be prepped to provide details on theory, data, methods if asked o Be balanced Note implications with evidence and avoid speculation on issues that are beyond the scope of research o Be credible Provide lots of footnotes and citations that fill in the gaps given space limitations o Be succinct Use to the point language and charts, graphs as much possible Four policy memo don’ts don’t write an academic paper, essay Don’t write everything you know or learned o Don’t write a mystery story o Don’t use technical jargon expect when necessary Oranizational memo o Similar to a policy memo, but much more targeted and specific to a particular organization No longer consider general implications for society Keep general theoretical very limited o Transition to focus on the organization as quickly as possible
