ANEQ 328 Foundations In Animal Genetics Week 16 Class Notes 5/3/16-5/5/16 Merging Multiple Types of Information for Genetic Improvement  Animal Breeding is centered around three main ideas: o Molecular Genetics o Transmission Genetics o Population Genetics  All in an effort to improve the genetic lineage of animals.  Genetic Improvement and Trend From Selection o Due to genetic selection there has been an increase trend in growth traits, such as yearling weight for example.  Composite Animals o A breed made up of two or more breeds in order to achieve hybrid vigor.  Ex. Poultry, Horse, and Beef Cattle and Angus  Evolution of EPD models o Animal’s pedigree o Various traits that we measure for animals  Ex. Knowing the weaning weight value can help predict the genetic breeding value for weaning weight. o Multi-breed  Ex. Simental and angus crosses o Animal’s genetic information  Molecular breeding value  Genomic relationship matrix o EPD used for Beed Cattle o PTA used for Dairy Cattle o EBV used for Horses  Ex. A Bull with a yearling weight of +100 (. 95) on his EPD.  In 1982 the yearling weight was 1,000lbs. 1 year later he is expected to have a yearling weight of 1,100lbs.  Since the accuracy of the EPD is .95 we can be pretty confident that it is accurate.  Pedigree Accuracy o RNA Sequencing gives important information for genes and SNP (functional info SNP) o WGS=Whole Genome Selection  Makes the breeding value more accurate.  EPD Accuracy o The more DNA info you provide on an EPD the more accurate it becomes. ANEQ 328 Foundations In Animal Genetics Week 16 Class Notes 5/3/16-5/5/16  Traits That Can’t Be Measured With EPDs o Feed Efficiency o Fertility o Health Traits o Grazing distribution o Consumption traits  DNA to Phenotype o DNARNAProtein
