Bio Week 14 Notes: (5/9, 5/11, 5/13) I. Climate Change = “anthropogenic” a. Greenhouse gases= make the earth habitable, but it has increasing the heat that is held I the atmosphere. b. Why is it a big deal? The rate at which climate is changing is exponentially fast. II. Species Extinction: a. Habitat loss b. Introduction to invasive species that out do the native species.  We as humans have the ability to innovate and to solve the problems. III. Sustainability: a. Increase security b. Family planning education and birth control c. Laws d. Improve economic and political standings of women 1. Sustainable Development: a. Solar panels b. Smaller homes 2. Sustainable Resource Consumption: a. Reduce, reuse, recycle b. Problem is that not every part can be recycled. 3. Sustainable Agriculture: a. Choosing better food-thinking in regards to the fuel that it takes to ship food-could go instead to local grower b. Poly-culture and not mono c. Farmers market d. Organic 4. Sustainable Energy: a. Fossil fuels: oil, gas, coal i. + cheap supply, infrastructure, med-high energy ii. – emission = health issues, climate, $$ b. Nuclear: i. + efficient, usually safe ii. – waste, if something were to go wrong there are very serious repercussions, radioactive mining c. Solar: i. + clean, potential to increase, may meet all energy demands ii. – some pollutions of greenhouse gases, costly, seasonal (need a back up in winter) d. Hydro: i. + generally sustainable, clean ii. – ecological issues (dam), patchy, concern of methane decomposition in water e.
