Juvenile Gangs Week 2 Lecture 3 Juveniles and Brain Maturation  The brain  What is it and does it change when we grow up?  Most complicated organ in the world is the brain  Maturation process  Legally one is an adult, but is that ”adult” mature?  When one is 18, you are punished as an adult and trialed as an adult  18 is a legal definition Stage One of Brain Development  Birth to around 3 years old  Color, sound, light, texture, and taste  They explore the world and know they have a family  They do not know differences between safe and dangerous situations  Bonding with parents is important stage Stage Two  2 to 5 year old  Identify objects and people like mommy and daddy… important people grandma and grandma  Develop a sense of family  Observe everything  Startle reflex Stage Three  90% of the size of their brain  Born with a temperament  Adult personality around 9-10 years old  4 to 10 years of age  Children have begun to understand order  Sort objects and people out  Start to figure out importance of purpose and life  Know difference between right vs. wrong  Difference between life and death Stage Four  7 to 14 years of age  13 – 15 years of age = puberty  Start of physical maturity  Start of psychological maturity  Start to understand the big scheme of things  Define character and personality  Teenager stage  Mellow with age and things don’t bother you as much anymore Stage five  Poverty, not having good relationship, putting things in your body  12 to 24 years of age  Understanding spirituality  Develop personality  Understanding beyond self  Develop social identity  High school years  Sexual maturity th  Maturation is a process 5 stage Human brain  Trillion nerve cells  Shaped like a walnut, touch it and it feels like tofu  Quarter inch between brain and top part of skull  Physical shock at back of brain if tackled  Frontal lobe is important and business manager decision maker of the mind  During stage five, frontal lobe structure changes drastically  Brain during stage 5, brain gets hardware and software update  Parietal and cerebellum work together  Use left side of the brain more than other other part  Left side is more active  Stress hormones come from  Area 4 on the females brain is connected differently than males left side  Men and women process information differently  Damage to area 4 on the left side influences ability to play instrument  Protein covering – myline = helps with conductivity with impulse nerves  Myline breaks down with Alzheimer’s  Whole brain changes shape through stages and through age Software  Brain development can be influenced by poverty, dysfunctional family life and exposure to violence  Illness and mental health disease  Mental health disease and addiction/drug addiction are brain diseases which causes brain chemistry to be messed up  The brain on the right lacks … and will have brain problems, will grow into an adult who is less intelligent, unemployed ….???  Influenced by the way they were treated by their mothers = difference in brain of 3 year olds
