Fighting against Fundamentalisms Wednesday, May 18, 2016 11:28 AM Under the Dome International Studies: An Enlightenment Project-Critiques, Corrections and Stages of Moral Growth Differentiated Conscio usness • Ability to hold multiple ideas and visions of life in one's head at the same time • Radically empirical, grounded in lived reality of experience, understanding that we have a past, a present and future • Hope to synthesize the whole while aware of the present moment Imperial and Colonization • Cultural interactions in an Interdependent World is an Enlightenment project by its very nature. International Studies is a function of the Enlightenment that has included imperialism (a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force), by the West around the world. • And colonization, by force, deliberately transforming other cultures toward our own. Responsive and Responsible • Our task is to interrogate these cultural movements, so that we can become more informed, even more enlightened, and we can become more responsive and responsible in our work and service in international affairs. Shadow Sides • Inability to reckon with difference and diversity • Inability to offer rights to the indigenous (in all their variant forms) who remain and may not want our enlightenment • Maybe even concept for those who are not adapting or adopting our policies. Enlightenment • One can be a proponent for the Enlightenment as we ll as critical of it. o So our task is to be self -critical and responsible in the task of using power and understanding power. Hermeneutics of Suspicion • Marxian Critique - we are alienated from our species being o Fundamentally, religion alienated people fr om their species being • Freudian Critique - the inward study of our unconscious; dreams are the royal road to the unconscious o A return to the maternal matrix o There are two things important: to work and to love • To do creative work and to love well o Religion was an escape from our fundamental unhappiness o Mental health is normal unhappiness o There is no escape from the human condition • Darwinian Critique - we are not different than other species • Nietzschean Critique - questioning the core insight of Jude o Christian faith - weakness is not a strength • Feminist Critique - Female inequality is the most obvious and yet long -lasting form of discrimination • LBGTQ Critique - the end of scapegoating • The International Critique - the temptation of parochialism - our tribe is the only tribe • The Climate Critique - Apocalypse: our magnificent inventions come back to destroy us Differentiated Consciousness • All are apart of the secular enlightenment project - one can e a secular Muslim, a secular Christian, or a secular agnostic • One can recognize and be aware of the critiques and also maintain the value of one's own culture all the while also taking in these critiques in order to be more open, even as they move forward • Holding one's own values all the while able to reco gnize, accept and see the others' without losing one's own • "Faith, classically understood, is not a separate dimension of life, a compartmentalized specialty. Faith is an orientation of the total person, giving purpose and goal to one's hopes and strivings , thoughts and actions" • When you feel your contradictions, be curious about them. Stages of Moral Growth • Early stage: o Imagination and imitation o Comfortably ego-centric o Distinguish what is real and what is only perceived o Concrete operational thinking - logic and linear thinking • Literal/mythical stage: o Stories of culture taken literally tame fantasy and imagination o Narrate experience giving coherence; danger of literalism o Development of reciprocal fairness; eye for an eye; beginning of seeing from another's perspective • Conventional Stage: o Stories that help diverse stories cohere o Conform to wider social ideologies o Authority located in traditional figures o Development of personal myth, story that unites experiences o Danger: my myth is the story • Individualist Reflective Stage o Questioning traditional norms o Self differentiated from others' expectations o Demytholize • Danger of stage is over rationalization; excessive confidence in the conscious mind and in critical thought; a second kind of narcissism. • Initiation to change: bubbling up of unconscious feelings and thoughts; recognition that on rationalistic level life is rather flat. • Life is more complex than one thought before. • Conjunctive Vision o Ability to live in diverse worlds, voices and views o Openness to strange truths, voice of others o One's own group's meaning becomes relative o Envision a wider community of humanity o Second naivete; story-symbols are reunited with concept unusual before mid -life Highest Stage of Moral Growtj • Lose the need for self-preservation - transcendent moral and religious actuality give their actions and words an extraordinary and often unpredictable quality. • Devoted to universalizing compassion they may offend a groups' parochial perceptions of justice • Enlarged visions of universal community disclose the partialness of their own tribes • Leadership initiatives, often involving strategies of nonviolent suffering and ultimate respect for all beings • Figures frequently become martyrs for the visions they incarnate The Psychological Ingredients of Climate Change Denial Friday, May 20, 2016 11:27 AM Differentiated Consciousness • A term comes from philosopher Eric Voegelin • Holding one's own values all the while able to recognize, accept and see the others' without losing one's own. • Our finite belief systems are not ultimate • Being open to critical differences • Reality is not a system, we construct systems • "Faith classically understood, is not a separate dimension of life, a compartmentalized specialty.
