PSY 202 Elementary Statistics Exam 2 Study guide (Chapters 6 – 8) Chapter 6 • Normal Distribution:Atheoretical distribution with data that are symmetrically distributed around the mean, median, and mode. • Mathematically defined • Theoretical • Mean, Median, and Mode are all located at the 50th percentile • Symmetrical • The mean can equal any value • The standard deviation can equal any positive value • Total area under the curve is equal to 1.0 • The tails of a normal distribution are asymptotic • Percentiles • Ascore that has a certain percentage of scores below it. Chapter 7 • Sampling Distribution:Adistribution of all possible sample means or variances that could be obtained in samples of a given size from the same population. • Sampling Error: The extent to which sample means selected from the same population differ form one another. • Standard Error: The standard deviation of a sampling distribution of sample means. • Regardless of the distribution of scores in a population, the sampling distribution of sample means selected from that population will be approximately normally distributed. • The mean of the sampling distribution of means will equal the true population mean. • As the population standard deviation decreases, standard error decreases • As sample size increases, standard error decreases • Law of large numbers: increasing the number of observations size will decrease standard error. • The smaller the standard error, the closer a distribution of sample means will be from the population mean. Chapter 8 • Amethod for testing a hypothesis about a parameter or population, using data measured in a sample. • Purpose: to test claims or ideas about a group or population • Goal: to determine the likelihood that a population parameter, such as the mean, is likely to be true • Null Hypothesis: Statement about the population parameter (such as the mean) that is assumed to be true. Starting point to determine if null is likely to be true or not • Alternative Hypothesis: Statement that contradicts the null hypothesis.Allows us to state what we think is wrong.
