Irum Nadeem GROUP SPEECHES CJ130 Topic: The arts as a medium for change Sub-topic: Music Specific purpose: By the end of our presentation, the audience will be able to list at least 2 things that inspire change in music. Thesis: I will be discussing on how music is a medium for change. I will be talking about three main points, including global music that talk about change, local music on campus, and how we can attend in these events. I. Music A. Introduction 1. Introduce subtopic and preview Main Points B. Global Music that inspires change 1. There are different kind’s song that inspire for change. It could be anything between from a change of aggression, of nature, world peace, or even activism! i. Briefly talk about Imagine by John Lennon (example) a. Was released in 1971 b. Musician in the 1960s- late 1980s c. In Geoffrey Giuliano’s book, Lennon in America, Lennon comments that the song was about “an anti- religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-conventional, anti- capitalistic song. Because it is sugar- coated, it’s accepted.” i. Hopes for a more peaceful world. ii. Briefly talk about “Where is the love” by Black Eyed Peas (example) a. Released in 2003 b. Identifies and indicates the causes of the problems in the world and tells us to let go of anger and focus on love. i. “As for the other people around the globe, they can vividly saw through the pain and frustration being articulated in the song over the lack of unison and sense of togetherness in the world. Local Music on campus 1. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any specific artist that inspire music but you can see people on campus singing and playing some sort of instrument. You can also: i. You can go to UNMs radio station at kunm.org/programs to listen to radio talks or just music in general such as: a. Other Voices, Other Sounds which play contemporary music and sound art at an international perspective. b. Overnight Freeform which is a diverse showcase of KUNM’s music library, uncovering the common roots from different places and times. D. How we can attend in these events? 1. Music doesn’t have to be vocal in order to inspire! It can be anything that you put your mind to it (having an open mind?) i. There are event that are hold in Pope Joy Hall that perform music events. a. Can go to the UNM website or go to their website at popejoypresents.com and look for ticket prices. ii. Can go to the Chatter that is here in Albuquerque a.
