         European Exploration of the World’s Oceans      Chapter 16: Part 1 1. European Oceanic Expansion  Explorers were inspired by monarchs such as Prince Henry the Navigator.  They conquered new lands in America. ( Cortez, Pizarro, Balboa de Soto, Ponce  de Leon) and the missionaries out to find converts.  What were the results of exploration, conquest and conversion? The results were new European land, trade based empires, Columbian Exchange Of  People, disease, and crops and animals. 2. Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal  March 4,1394­November 3,1460  Henry did not sail any of the voyages he sponsored. He made a school for  navigation, mapmaking and shipbuilding.  He started the search of the West African coast and by 1460 the Portuguese had  explored the coast of Africa. 3. Technological Advances  Compass and astrolabe; mapmaking military weaponry, and long range weapons.  Europeans borrowed them from the Chinese and Arab merchants and sailors.
