Notes from An Introduction to Computer Science Introduction to Computer Science and Algorithms Part 1 Objective of these notes: ● Understand what computer science means ● Understand how to write basic algorithms that are applicable to everyday life ○ Check for ambiguity and computability ● Understand the origins of the mathematics and mechanics behind modern  computer science ● Understand key events in computer science’s history Computer science is NOT: ● A field that studies computers ● A field that studies how to write programs ● A field that studies the applications of computers or software Computer science IS a discipline concerning algorithms and: ● Their mathematical properties ● Their hardware properties ● Their linguistic properties ● Their applications Algorithm Definition (informal): A sequenced list of instructions that can be used to solve a  problem Three different types of algorithmic operations: ● Sequential (Do X, then do Y, then do Z, etc.) ● Conditional (If X is true, then do Y.) ● Iterative (For X times in Y, do Z.) Agents of Computation: ● Machine ● Person ● Robot Algorithm Definition (formal): a collection of computable operations that is both well­ordered and free of ambiguity, which when executed, yields a result in a finite amount of time Well­ordered collection ­ there is a fixed, known subsequent step that needs to be taken Free of ambiguity ­ definite, well­written (coded) steps that don’t raise any questions as to what  the process is supposed to do More on algorithms: ● Must not just be understandable, but also doable (computable) ● Result may be text, a picture, a number, an internal change in the computer, etc.  and it must be produced in a finite amount of operations ○ Non­finite (infinite) loops run forever and are usually mistakes
