Gabby Palomera English 102 February 16, 2016 Quiz #1 1) Name the six elements of fiction. The six elements of fiction are the following: 1.Character 2.Point of view 3.Setting 4.Style 5.Theme 6.Plot 2) What is the purpose of irony? The purpose of irony is to make the reader aware of the reality that differs from  the reality of the characters. 3) What is a symbol? Symbol can be defined as an object or action that means something beyond its  literal meaning. 4) Name two things you might do to help you understand the theme of a story  more clearly. Two things I might do to help me understand the theme of the story is to  recognize the different types of imagery as well as try to understand the tone of  the story best as possible. 5) Do formalist critics regard a work of literature based on its intrinsic or extrinsic  nature? Intrinsic: belonging to a thing by its very nature Extrinsic: not part of the essential nature of someone or something; coming or  operating from outside. The formalist critics regard a work of literature based on the intrinsic nature. 6) In "The Things They Carried,” whose letters did First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross  burn? The First Lieutenant burn’s the letters and pictures of the girl, he is in love with  names Martha. 7) According to Bobbie Ann Mason, in "On Tim O'Brien's 'The Things They  Carried,'” what does O'Brien reveal about war? He does not look at the combat aspects of war. He focuses on revealing the  emotional and psychological changes the people go through because of war.  8) What is the full name of the main character in "The Story of an Hour"? Louise Mallard  9) What distinguishes a good thesis statement from an inadequate one? A good thesis statement contains information that allows the readers to be able  to have an opinion. In other words a good thesis statement is debatable. A good  thesis statement should be narrow and supported by evidence. The last step to  knowing you have a good thesis is to construct a road map for the entire paper.  By the end of the first paragraph if one has a good thesis the reader will know  st what the paper is going to be about. If by the end of the 1  paragraph the reader  cannot identify the topic or have their own opinion then the thesis statement is  inadequate. 10) What is the difference between analysis and explication? Literary analysis focuses on how plot/structure, character, setting, and many  other techniques are used by the author to create meaning. Explication is where additional understandings and meanings are derived from  the "close reading" of a poem, novel or play.
