Akindipe 1  Victor Akindipe  Ms. Sepkowski  Writing for college  7 November 2015  Humans are Killing Earth  Humans are slowly killing the earth. We are killing animals, destroying our oceans, and  depleting earth of its natural resources. There are currently 905 extinct species. 269,000 tons of  plastic waste float on the surface  of our oceans. Deforestation is destroying earth’s beautiful  sceneries to make way for industrial buildings that will also contribute to air pollution. If we  continue in careless and  wasteful  ways  earth  will  no  longer be habitable, we will eventually  destroy our home. We need to come to together to help solve the pollution crisis at hand. Major  changes need to be made in our lifestyles, if we want to be able to continue the earth to sustain  future generations. If people do not come together to put an end to pollution, we as a species will  no longer have a habitat.  The  extinction  rate  is  increasing  dramatically.  Everyday dozens of  species  are going  extinct and it is  our fault. We’ve  ignored  this  problem long  enough.  “In fact, 99 percent of  currently threatened  species are at risk from human activities, primarily those driving habitat  loss, introduction of exotic species and global warming”(J ames Gerken). Animals like the West  African Black Rhinoceros, that we were once able to enjoy the presence of are no longer in  existence, meaning our children  will  not be able  to enjoy  the presence of  those magnificent  animals that our ancestors and ourselves were once able to. The extinction rate has now risen to  0.1% , and humans are to blame (Animals Abused And Killed for Their Skin). Some species are  Akindipe 2  being  hunted  and  killed  for  their  skin  and  body  parts.  Zebras,  bison, water  buffalo,  boars,  kangaroos, elephants, eels, sharks, dolphins, seals, walruses, frogs, turtles, crocodiles, lizards, and  snakes are perfect examples, yet we  continue  to kill these animals even though  they are  all  endangered. Humans need to act fast if we want to preserve any of earth's beautiful creatures for  future generations.  Earth’s oceans are constantly being contaminated with waste created by humans. This is a  big  problem because,  plastic is not  a  natural material,  so  it  takes hundreds of years for it to  decompose. Most plastic can only begin to decompose after about one thousand years, meaning  the 269,000 ton of plastic waste in our ocean is going to be there for years to come if we do not  act fast (Laura Parker). “ irty water is the world's biggest health risk, and continues to threaten  both quality of life and public health in the United States.” We are hurting ourselves by not not  putting together an effort to help solve this issue. This is the reason why many nation suffering  from  pollution,  their  rivers,  beaches,  and  coastlines  have polluted water. Linfen,  China and  Dzerzinsk, Russia, are prime examples of nation that have succumb to pollution. In these places  it has become so bad that children are being born with birth defects such as mental retardation,  spina bifida, cleft palate and missing limbs. If humans just changed their ways, children will not  have to suffer from these deformities.   Forest are essentially the lungs of the earth, within them are the homes of many different  species of plant and animals. “Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to  make the land available for other uses. An estimated 18 million acres (7.3 million hectares) of  forest, which is roughly the size of the country of Panama, are lost each year, according to the  United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).” Earth’s lush greeneries are being  Akindipe 3  destroyed to make way for industrial building that will add to the pollution crisis. 70 percent of  plants  and animals live in forests, deforestation is causing these different species to lose their  habitat’s.  Wildlife  biodiversity  is  plummeting  due  to  deforestation.  By  destroying  different  vegetations, animals are losing their food supply, many of these animals die of starvation. The  species that live in the forests have been conditioned to live in a certain environment, when the  forest are cut down the animals are displaced and have no home.  Groups like; Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Friends of the earth (FOE),  Earth Policy Institute,  and World wide fund for nature (WWF) are already trying to help restore  earth’s glory. Their mission is to stop the degradation of our planet's natural environment, and  build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. The WWF focuses on biodiversity,  their goal is to ensure earth’s web of life stays healthy and vibrant for generations to come. The  NRDC is the most effective environmental organization. They use science and law and support  from their members to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places to ensure every living thing  has  a  safe and  healthy  environment live in. These programs and organization are helping the  cause by bringing them to light, so they can no longer be ignored. There still needs to be a world  wide effort where everyone comes together to resolve the issue. Everyone needs to know the  consequences that will occur if continue abusing earth.  Civilization’s careless and nonchalant attitude towards the environment will eventually  kill earth. We have already caused enough damage by killing earth’s animals, polluting earth’s  waters, and cutting down earth’s forests. It is now time for a new era, an era where we come  together as a species to help better our habitat, earth. What people need to understand is that, this  is our home and we only have one. We need to make it known across the globe that earth is  Akindipe 4  dying and it is our fault. If we do not start to better our way of life, earth will no longer be able to  sustain the human race. If earth dies then we would no longer have a home, which will ultimately  lead to our extinction.
