Biology 121: Week 1 1.1: Biology is the scientific study of life. • Biologists recognize life through a series of properties shared by all living things • Biologists consider an object to be alive if, and only if, it displays all of these properties: ○ Cells ○ Reproduction ○ DNA ○ Performs enzymatic functions ○ Ability to adapt • Biotic components: living things • Abiotic components: nonliving things • What are the 3 Main Domains? ○ Eukarya ○ Archaea ○ Bacteria • Eukarya ○ DNA is enclosed within the nucleus ○ Contains 7-8 super groups ○ Most important super group: opisthokonta ○ Kingdoms § Animalia § Fungi § Plants 1.1: Properties of Living Things • Reproduction: All organisms reproduce their own kind ○ Two forms of reproduction § Meiotic: sexual reproduction, germ cells § Mitotic: asexual reproduction, somatic cells • Growth and Development: Information carried by genes controls the pattern of growth in all organisms ○ Patterns of growth are inherited ○ DNA is information • Energy Use: Every organism takes in energy, converts it to useful forms, and expels energy ○ Almost all energy comes from the sun ○ Plants convert 1% of the sun's rays into useful forms and the other 99% decipates ○ A cow eats the plant and absorbs 10% energy ○ Person eats the cow and absorbs 10% energy § Trophic level energy transfer: always 10% ○ The ocean and other bodies of water absorb a lot of the sun's energy ○ Ice reflects the sun's energy • Order: Each living thing has a complex but well-ordered structure ○ A cow has four stomachs to break down microorganisms that humans cannot • Cells: All living organisms consist of cells ○ Some living organisms have just one cell ○ Some living organisms have trillions of cells (people) Biology 121: Week 1 ○ When Red Blood Cells (RBCs) block the passage of coronary arteries, this can cause a heart attack (myocardial infarction) • Response to the Environment: All organisms respond to changes in the environment ○ Everything is in constant change ○ Life has the ability to adapt to these changes ○ Many of these responses help to keep an organism’s internal environment within narrow limits ○ Average time a species is in existence: 5-10 million years
