Week 1 8/19/16 Sociology The study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society *in this case, the study of social problems So what is a Social Problem? 1) No universal definition 2) Relative to different groups based on their unique social condition 3) Comprised of t wo e lements: *Subjective Element: The awareness of social conditions through life experiences *Objective Element: The belief that social condition is harmful to society or a segment and that it should be changed *Subjective is from the subject's (your) own point of view *Objecti ve is much bigger, includes the world around you A social problem can be defined as a social condition that a segment of society views as harmful and in need of remedy. Variations are due to differences in values, beliefs, and life experiences. Examples of current Social Problems: Police Brutality Slavery Human Trafficking LGB(TQ) Rights
