COMM­130: Essentials of Public Speaking Ch.1 Lecture Notes  ­Sarah Silverman: Sell the Vatican in order to end world hungry its worth 500 billion  dollars and the pope will be a hero “you’ll get all the pussy”. ­Public speaking: in order to inform, persuade, and entertain. ­Aristotle from B.C.E would speak about civic matters and conceptualized the idea of  Rhetoric, the faculty of observing any giving objective in the method of persuasion. ­Public speaking comes out in inner cultural conversation. ­Inform: have a visual aid (picture), from an objective stance, without a bias, not from  personal feelings. ­Persuade: from a subjective stance, bias/ your interpretation, ex: recycle, vote,  veganism. ­Entertain: a mixture of informative and persuasive stance; deliberative: more in political  round or giving policy, epideictic: your weddings and funeral speeches, forensic: in  the legal field court room and juries. ­Public speaking: always has an audience, non­verbal feedback ex: head nodding etc.;  they disagree say it’s important because of blank. ­Trying to gauge people by identification: the idea that once a speaker talks in a  particular way i.e. democratic speaking to all voters and only speaking and  democratic ways, you automatically exclude a percentage of the audience by trying to appeal to a specific party/ section of people, the message won’t appeal everyone it’s  impossible, there’s a form of disconnect. ­Hollie Hancock: Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs: self­actualization: truth, wisdom, justice,  morality, lack of prejudice; esteem: self­respect, achievement, attention, recognition,  reputation; emotional: friends, belonging, love; safety: home, medical, job, financial;  and physiological: breathing, sleep, food, water, sex. ­Artistic proofs: Ethos, Pathos, Logos. ­Inartistic proofs: things you bring to a speech, ex: evidence, figures, facts, props. ­Ethos: integrity, competence, dynamism, good will, prior reputation (ethos is the  audience’s perception of the speaker). ­Pathos: (ex: Hitler, Stalin) only focus on the message they engage in, how you can  move a person’s emotions to get them to do something (anger: use to get people to  do something about it). ­Logos: ability to use logic and reason to deploy a particular persuasive message,  anyone of them in excess will have negative connotation (excess logos is boring  because no passion, its dry); (excess pathos makes people upset and feel bad about  things); (excess ethos will cause the audience to see you as arrogant and a know it  all) *these 3 things need to have a balance. ­Communication through new technology: texting language our generation created. ­More aware of cultural diversity through our generations communication: cic­cultural is  political correctness, international perspective of communication we have low and  high context communicators the U.S. is low context communicators because we are  in your face.
