English 1102 Notes: Week One    Classification of Literature    What classifies something as literature?  ● Complexity  ○ Can you read the work again and find new?  ○ Some pieces that can be considered “simple” are also   ● Universality  ○ Can everyone learn something from it?  ○ Problems lie with cultural differences (beliefs, language,etc.) that can impede certain  people from properly understanding the text.  ● Longevity  ○ Will people be reading the work 50 years from now?  ○ However, tastes change over time.  ● Psychological Plausibility  ○ Do the characters seem like a real person?  ○ Sometimes, stories with implausible characters can still have literary value    Good to define literature but aren’t absolute: there are exceptions!     Thesis Creation and ​The Veldt    What is a Thesis?  ● Thesis  ○ Claim made by text  ○ Made up of focus + arguable association  ● Focus  ○ The specific aspects of the text that lead you to the arguable assertion  ● Arguable Assertion  ○ Something that most readers will not see upon first read  ○ Can be disagreed with  ○ Not arguable: facts or a summary of the text.  ○ “Depth"  ● Working Thesis  ○ Hypothesis of what you believe to be the thesis  ○ First step in formulating a strong thesis  ○ Assume this thesis will change during the writing process                    Free Write: ​The Veldt  ​ What is ​ he Veldt about?  ● The Veldt is about the role of technology in the development of children/ the parent’s role in  monitoring what is or isn’t appropriate.  ● The Veldt is about parenting­ specifically, ​allowing technology to replace the role of the  parent​. In the text, the children are given a nursery which shows them whatever they want to  see. To them, this replaces the role of the parents, who aren’t really seen in the story playing  an active role in their upbringing. The parents become concerned when the walls of the  nursery are repeatedly showing the same image: a violent depiction of lions in the Savannah.  Their immediate reaction shows quite a lot about their parenting style: ​Their first instinct is to  “Call someone…maybe a psychologist” instead of actively talking to their children about the  concerning imagery​. At the end of the story, the parents are (presumably..?) ​devoured by the  lions in the nursery­ fulfilling the role of parents in the wild, just as the children saw them.      Possible Thesises   ● Modern family distracted by modern technology.  ● Parenting­ letting devices replace the parents.  ● Intimacy within rich households in the 1950’s  ○ Cultural shift of the affluent family to hiring help/using tech. v. parenting actively  ● Replacing parents­ what is lost (humanity, etc)  ○ What tech. shows children that they wouldn’t otherwise see that could possibly  change them  ● Passive parenting v. active parenting   ○ Ceding authority    Important Ideas  ● Concept of the unreal becoming real  ○ What is “real”?  ○ “It’s too real"  ○ Getting lost in technology  ○ Unreal surpasses real and becomes the reality  ● “Neverland”= The nursery?  ​ ○ Allusion to ​Peter Pan through the names of the children  ● Selective use of imagery  ○ Bradbury used large amounts of imagery to describe The Veldt  ○ Few adjectives about the parents/household/real world  ■ Makes the world outside of nursery seem “flat”, in a way.  ● Experience of the Veldt  ○ Through the parents, reader gets the idea of what the children see  ○ What perspective does the reader experience?  ● Technology as a release  ○ Escapism  ○ Originally the Veldt was an escape, but it became a channel towards destructive  thought.  ○ Where does the destructive thought come from?  ■ Amplifies destructive behavior  ● Parental relationships  ○ Child or not?  ○ Technology enables children to grow up too fast  ○ caught in­between  ○ “Innocence"
