VIC3001 Week 4 Sound is vibrations traveling through the air The nature of the vibrations (“sound waves”) determines the nature of sound Amplitude of the sound wave dictates the volume Frequency of the sound wave dictates the pitch Microphones work similarly to our eardrums… the best mics will be the ones that most accurately detect and convert the vibrations into electrical signals This information about the frequency and amplitude of the original sounds will be translated back into vibrations later; (from a speaker or headphones) Different microphone types have different pickup patterns Omnidirectional – mic that picks up sound from all directions Cardiod “heart shaped” – picks up sound in front of the mic; does not pick up audio from the back Hyper-cardiod “shotgun” – very directional, picks up less audio from the side and more of the audio in the back Common microphone types Dynamic “stick” mic – typical handheld mic used by news crews (RE mics is the typical standard mic for news organization) Shotgun mic – directional pickup, requires a windscreen outside, too sensitive to handhold (w/o a shock mount) Lavalier (“lav”) mics – designed to clip on clothing, (sometimes called a lapel mic), typically omnidirectional Stereo vs Mono Audio Many video cameras actually have 2 microphones on them: Right channel (channel 2) Left channel (channel 1) Stereo audio is two different mic inputs are fed to two different speakers and the directionality of the sound is preserved The LEFT channel is PANNED LEFT and the RIGHT channel is PANNED RIGHT This works great when you shoot video using only the on-camera microphones Mono audio would be if all mic inputs were fed equally to all speakers. Mono audio is just one channel, CENTER PANNED With Dual Mono audio the left and right channels are center panned
