Angelica Gallegos KNES 191 A: Lab #1 ANATOMICAL TERMINOLOGY Anatomical Position: standing upright, face PLANES forward, arms are at the sides, with the  ­Sectioning of the entire body or body parts  palms forward. along various planes made in order to  observe relative locations and arrangements  of internal parts. Includes the following: Supine: lying down when face up Sagittal, midsagittal, median or  anteroposterior: refers to a lengthwise  plane that divides the body into left and right portions. Mid sagittal is used only when  Prone: lying down when face down referring to the entire body. Coronal, frontal or lateral: refers to a  plane that divides the body into anterior and  posterior portions. Superficial: situated near the surface Transverse or horizontal: refers to a plane  Deep: parts that are more internal that divides the body into superior and  inferior portions. Angelica Gallegos TERMS OF RELATIVE POSITION ­Used to describe the location of one body  part with respect to another. Includes the  following: Superior: a part is above another part, or  closer to the head. Inferior: a part is below another part, or  toward the feet. Anterior (ventral):  toward the front. Posterior (dorsal): toward the back. Medial: a part is closer to an imaginary  midline dividing the body or body part into  equal left and right halves. Lateral: a part is toward the side with  respect to the imaginary midline. Ipsilateral: pertains to the same side Contralateral: pertains to the opposite side Proximal: a part is closer to the trunk of the  body or closer to another specified point of  reference than another part. Angelica Gallegos Distal: a part is farther from the trunk or  *Proximal and distal are often used with  farther from another specific point or  reference to limbs only, however, proximal  reference than another part. and distal can be used with reference to the  head.
