Sean Baumeister COMM 116 7/20/16 Week 1 Homework Assignment Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA) Assessment Were you surprised by your score in any of the areas? Explain why or why not.  None of the scores surprised me. The test gave an accurate breakdown of my  situational commination apprehension. I feel much more comfortable in a group  or meeting setting than I do in a public speaking setting. My scores in public  speaking were the highest of any communication situation.   How might knowing these scores help you to become a better communicator? Knowing these scores can help me identify my weakness so I can develop  personal situationally targeted strategies to help me improve my communication  skills. In general the more specific you can get with training and skill  development the more effective it will be.  Nonverbal Communication Assessment Do you notice a difference in the nonverbal behaviors of these two people? The coworker I liked maintained eye contact, varied their voice, use subtle  touching, and did not lean away from we talked. The coworker I disliked did not  maintain eye contact, vary their voice and tended to lean away when we spoke.  In what ways did the nonverbal behaviors impact how you reacted to these two people?  The coworker I liked nonverbal behaviors made me welcome and respected. I  always felt like they acknowledged and listened to my thoughts in a respectful  manner.   The coworker I disliked had nonverbal behaviors that made me feel like I wasn’t  worth their time or that they had something better to do. Their nonverbal  behaviors didn’t make me feel welcome or like they were listening to me.  What communication behaviors might you try to improve your relationship with the  person you don't like working with? This exercise was eye opening I didn’t realize how important nonverbal  communication was in a professional setting. I will make it a point to maintain  eye contact, respect personal space and vary my voice. I think that being aware of  my tone will be the most difficult going forward. P.S. :One thing I found interesting was playing with the data from the NVA (Nonverbal  Assessment). I used a spreadsheet to calculate the data in excel and I cell referenced the  calculations so changing the question score will instantly change the total score. I’ll post  this to the drop box so you can play around with if you want.
