Introduction  Immune system = cells, tissues, and molecules that help with resistance to infections.  Immunology = study of how the immune system works.  Immunity = capability for host cells to be resistant to pathogens  Immune response = response mediated by cells of the immune system that detect foreign  pathogens  *Many pathogens can expand rapidly in the nutrient­rich environment of the host! (ex:  8hrs = 280 trillion bacteria)  Thymus = place where T cells function in the body! (Where T cells become T cells!!!)  Spleen = filters the blood  Lymph nodes = filters lymph  Bone marrow also contributes to the immune system (B cells = make antibodies!) Every cell from the immune system originates from a Stem Cell     Small Pox – only known virus that has been eradicated from the planet!
